Hi,
Let me just explain to you practically!. Sacrifice is best seen around the world in a mother!. She sacrifices her whole life for her child!. She can be bad to any relationship but not to her child!. Hence earth is called as mother as it just gives us all the requirements without any expectations!. A mothers relationship towards her child how ever old he or she is, is always pure and unexplainable!. It has to be felt and experienced!. Try to recollect incidences from your childhood till now about your own mom and others!. Her love towards you will be the topmost priority!. I dont know how you are feeling!. Ofcourse she may have beat you and scolded you but she cant even withstand even if you have a small wound!. SHe will cry unknown to you!. You may have the physical pain!. But her heart will be wounded due to your suffering!. This is called as sacrifice!. There are many sacrifices with different relationships!. But the best and topmost sacrifice is a mothers love towards her child!. Even an animal sacrifice is held as a function!. A lovers sacrifice and so on and on!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!. But mom's !.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.its divine!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Dan-O is only half right when he says "Giving up something important to yourself or others!."

It is giving up something important for something LESS IMPORTANT!. If this was not the case, "sacrifice" would have no meaning!.

You "give up" $1 for the change to win millions in a lottery!. Yet if you lose, thus benefitting someone else, it was not a sacrifice unless that $1 was meant for bread for your children's sandwiches and as a result they had none!.

If you put your life at risk to save someone else and it is not your paid and sworn duty to do so, it is a sacrifice if in doing so you lose your own life and your wife or husband or children lose you!. It is not a sacrifice to call 911 instead, if your life would be in danger to give physical help, even if the other person dies!. You do not "sacrifice" someone else when you refuse to sacrifice your own life to his!.

And so, as to the Christian meaning of Christ's sacrifice, the Founding Fathers were of a like-mind with President John Adams, who wrote:
"I almost shudder at the thought of alluding to the most fatal example of the abuses of grief which the history of mankind has preserved -- the Cross!. Consider what calamities that engine of grief has produced!"Www@QuestionHome@Com

I interpret sacrifice as placing other's people's happiness, desires, emotions etc above that of your own
True act of sacrifice is one that removes your own selfishness, an act of sacrifice is selfless as it done for/in another person's cause and not for your own gain!.

I'm not going all religious on you but Jesus Christ exemplifies the true meaning of sacrifice!.
Books or novels about sacrifice could be:
Romeo & Juliet, in the end both lovers sacrifice their lives for one another, to show the strength of their love for one another, that they would not be able to live their life contentedly without one another!.
If you want a movie I think Schindler's List is a good film that portrays a man in high society who sacrificed his own safety and life in order to secretly save the lives of thousands of jewish people, homosexuals, gypsies, even christians all of whom would have landed themselves in concentration camps, during Hitler's regime !. !.back then the penalty for treason would be death !. !.

Try finding stories about self sacrifice for a greater good/cause!.

I'm sure there are real life stories of famous people who fit that criteria as well as those we found in inspiring novels!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sacrifice means giving up a very or even the most important or precious thing to you so that others may benefit from that which you have sacrificed!.
The best story to describe sacrifice is God's shedding of His own blood (through His other persona and own son, Jesus Christ) to save the sin-stained history and future of humanity!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

When I was in my early 20's, I loved a girl very much!. We never officially "dated" but we hung out together almost every waking hour for over two years!. My father died right before I met her and I didn't want to start anything until I was sure I was over my loss!. It wouldn't be fair to her or me!. One day, I was approached by a friend who asked me if I had any feelings for the girl!. I told him that I did, but if he could make her happy then I wouldn't stand in his way!. They were married a few years later!. I gave up my happiness for hers!. To me, that was a sacrifice!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
