Everytime you hear people talk about their dreams and goals in life they say things like, "Oh I want to live in a nice home!. A beautiful car, a white picket fence, a husband and beautiful chidlren; etc"

"Good fences make good neighbors" - They give you a sense of ownership ("this is my property, that's yours")!. They act as a marker between your yard, and the neighbor's!. They can keep something/someone in, or keep something/someone out, depending on your viewpoint!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, "white picket fences" is something that people who are in a conformist stage of development may care a great deal about!.
One in which Children (or adults) identify their own welfare with that of group expectations!. They tend to be insensitive to individual differences , to be highly sterotyped in response, particularly about gender roles!. Inner life is seen in black and white: happy/sad, good/bad!.
It is not the best or worse stage to be stuck in, but many people never advance beyond it their entire lives!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The white picket fence is used as a figure of speech to describe the ideal "perfect family life"!.
