That method of speech is the way whites made fun of blacks' speech patterns after the Civil War, and right into the 20th Century!. I have a tape recording of my grandfather doing that routine!. He used to wear blackface and perform in the annual "Showboat!."

It think it had to do with the attempt of "N!.e!.g!.r!.o!.e!.s" to become educated; and racist whites made fun of their speech!. Do you remember that scene in the movie "Blazing Saddles" when the college educated black guy meets the stupid lazy uneducated white guy with the whip!?Www@QuestionHome@Com
