Question: I've a debate and i need reason why human progress is guided by science!?

science helps elevate the knowledge of humans!. and humans constantly are searching for knowledge!. science helps stimulate the human mind while helping to prolong human existence!. for example with the help of science humanity was able to create medicine and cure diseases!. humanity is inquisitive and science is a reflection of the curiosity of humanity!. science helps explain and answer questions that humans have asked!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Science has done much to advance the human race!. But it is, ultimately, only a subset of logic and rational thought!. And that is why it's succeeded so well!. The scientific method, and rational thought in general, have allowed us to not only figure out the world around us, but to confirm that what we think we know is actually true!.

Superstitious thought, also known as "magical thinking" in psych jargon, is ultimately based on belief, the antithesis of rational thought!. It is usually unable to be tested for correctness or, when it can be, is invariably proven to be wrong!. A belief is at its core an emotion, a desire for something to be true--either despite a lack of supporting evidence, or in spite of evidence to the contrary!. This is the fundamental distinction between science and belief: with science, you follow the logic & evidence wherever it takes you, whereas with belief you both begin and end with the assumption that what you want to be true, is!.

To quote someone, I think it was Carl Sagan, science is superior to belief because it delivers the goods!. Yes, science can and has been used for bad ends!. But science is not to blame for that!. A machete can be used to clear brush or to kill people; it is a tool, and if it's used to kill then the fault lies with the person using it, not with the machete itself!. So too with science!. And comparing science to, say, religion, the respective track records stand in stark contrast!. Science has by far been a benefit to human civilization!. Religion has given us the Crusades, jihads, the Inquisition, and whenever it's been allowed to, has spread ignorance throughout society!.

I guess my ultimate point is that human progress has been guided not just by science, but by rational thought in general, of which the scientific method is one practical application!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

its guided by science because because without it, humans would be clueless of what the world is made of!. i mean, if we didn't have science in our lives, do you think we would be civilized!? Science also developed technology!. We all know that when we study a certain topic more, we gain more knowledge about it and thus, we are able to create more ways to move on to the next level and PROGRESS!.

hope i helped!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Science is the search for facts and man cannot live without facts!.

Just don't confuse fact with truth!.

"The entire science of mathematics, the whole domain of philosophy, the highest physics or chemistry, could not predict or know that the union of two gaseous hydrogen atoms with one gaseous oxygen atom would result in a new and qualitatively superadditive substance--liquid water!. The understanding knowledge of this one physiochemical phenomenon should have prevented the development of materialistic philosophy and mechanistic cosmology!." http://www!.urantia!.orgWww@QuestionHome@Com

that's a pretty loaded question, why don't you go to a library and pick up some books on science history, or society and technology!. Alternatively you could web-search the way inventions such as the light bulb have changed our lives!. I'm sure there'd be a ton of data!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Science is the discipline of the acquisition of knowledge, without which there is no progress!. Either you "know", or proceed in some manner to go about "knowing" or there is neither art nor technology and thus no progress!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

What exactly do you mean by human progress!? Progress of the Human civilization!? If so, there's more to it than science, technology, etc!. That's for sure!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
