Question: "Nothing is what it seems" Agree or disagree!? Why!? Why Not!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
I agree to a point!.

If it seems to you that nothing is what it seems, then you are right!.

That seeming is not what it seems!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Of course nothing is as it seems, because the world around us is reconstructed in our minds and our minds build this image of the world with preconceived attitudes, judgments, dislikes and likes!. As well, what is perceived via the five senses is not everything that can be perceived in the moment so we are actually creating a very incomplete model of reality with the mind!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Disagree for the simple reason that this validates Kant's "noumena!." Kant's noumena is an invention of his to throw us off the track of searching for any truth other than transient, momentary truth, because, "Kant’s expressly stated purpose was to save the morality of self-abnegation and self-sacrifice!. He knew that it could not survive without a mystic base—and what it had to be saved from was reason!."
Ayn Rand

Kant used Aristotle's metaphysics that the essence of a "thing" is "in the thing itself!." But Aristotle didn't mean it could not be known and understood!.

To make it clear that "nothing is what it seems," Kant then proceded with the epistemology of Plato, to throw doubt into the knowability of that which was "in the thing itself," and he called this essence "noumenal!." It is to phenomena what anti-matter is to matter; except that we believe we can understand anti-matter (Aristotilean epistemology) while Kant made it clear that never ever could man know Kant's noumena!.

I've erected a "noumenal" tribute to Kant in my office; no one can sense its existence, including me!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

agree!.

what you see things to be is your own point of view and is subject to relativism

besides humans have a tendency to see things egocentrically and then when wrong have this thing called hindsight bias!.!.

everything is relativeWww@QuestionHome@Com

Disagree, because if that's the logic you go by throughout your life then you're going to end up being a very paranoid and crazy person!. True to a point but I don't think true overall!. Someone can smile in your face, talk kindly and lie to you right to your face and secretly hate you, while others truly mean what they express!. Somethings aren't as they seem, but some are!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree!. The concept that everything is set in stone, so to speak, is not evident or possible!. There are too many variables to change the very fabric of what we conceive as 'what we seem', and only after the fact could we determine what everything really was what it was!.

Yes and No!. Everything we know is filtered through our senses and organized by our brains!. Without outside confirmation, we couldn't know!. Because we can have external independent confirmation, we can be reasonably certain of quite a few things!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
