Good breeding and manners!. However it started when women were considered the weaker sex and children who were considered helpless and so to save them it was considered gallant of a man to put the woman and the child first before himself!.

Same way a true gentleman opens the door for a woman, even though both of them know he doesn't have to , that the woman is quite capable of opening her own door!. Or he walks on the left hand side of her when they are walking down the street so she won't get rain or much or whatever on her!.

All etiquette really is is thinking about someone else's comfort rather than your own and protecting them from whatever!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes yes!.!.!. they have to go through the pain of childbirth!.!.!. whatever!. These so-called "ladies" also arbitrarily decide to abort the fetus so that they wont have to undergo childbirth!. This is the modern world!. Chivalry isnt dead!.!.!. but no woman deserves it!. I will be chivalrous to any woman who accepts her place as a lady, and my place as a gentleman!. Anyone else is just a pig that has lost praise in the place of equality

The concept of chivalry is not simply that men look out for women (ladies first) but that the strong are obligated to look out for those less able to protect themselves!.

Thus, an elderly man in frail health would be taken care of before a healthy woman in her prime!.

In situations where no one is clearly weak or helpless, it is simply a cultural norm - an expression of good manners!. I can open my own doors, but it is thoughtful of a man to step forward and open it for me!. However, if he's carrying the luggage, I'll open the door and hold it for him!. In North America, it was the prudish and sexist way of the Victorian Era which also included women not voting, being subjected to violence by the men in their life as well!.

It is a small sign of respect for your gender!. Like carrying a load for the woman!. It may well be a pound and a half but we will still do it out of respect!.
