Question: Can someone interperet this Plato verse please!?
I have to figure out if this is an argument and which are the premises/conclusion!. Please interpret this in terms I can understand:

"If you can discover better way of life than office holding for your future rulers, a well-governed city becomes a possibility!. For only in such a state will those rule are truly rich, not in gold, but in the wealth that makes happiness-- a good and wise life!."

The key is the archaic meaning of the word "discover!." In this case, the word means "reveal" or "expose!." So you get this:

"If you can reveal a better way of life than office holding for your future rulers!.!.!."

He's saying, "if you're governing a city, show the people who are holding office that "holding an office" is not their career!." They need to get off their butts and make wise decisions for the benefit of the people they serve!. In this way they will find true happiness, not just the temporary happiness we get from gold/money!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The argument is that good rulers don't come about just because they have a history or tradition of holding an office!.
The premise is that good rulers do come about as the result of living a life that is good and wise, one that brings them happiness!.
The conclusion is, that if the voters want their city to be run well, it is up to them to determine the good and wise way of life that results in happiness!. Then select your leaders from among those who are living that way of life!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Governing a city is often polluted by the politics that coincide with it!. Generally speaking, most politicians are more concerned with their political career than in doing their best as a representative of their people!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
