I disagree with some of the people so far!. Philosophy is all about asking things which either cannot be answered or cannot be proven right or wrong, such as Zeno's paradox!. Ask why there is a universe is part of philosophy and religion!. HOW pertains to science, which doesn't tend to lend anything from philosophy or religion!.

So, to answer your question, it certainly is a possibility!. Even when one takes God out of the picture, is it possible the universe is merely part of an even larger being!? Sure!. For all we know, everything which exists could simply be part of another being's mind or imagination!. If you look deeper into Quantum Mechanics, with every possibility forming out of every moment, then it would seem possible this could be true!.

Personally, I don't think the universe is part of GOd as in part of his body!. But, it could be!. I think he created it, though, not as an appendage!. Merely as a creation!.

Unfortunately your question pre-supposes the existence of a god!. Since this is an assumption based on facts that are decidedly NOT in evidence, the question is rendered non-functional!. The universe is a story being told!. Is the story the author!? Probably not, but it is certainly a reflection of the author!.

Now I suppose a hardcore atheist might argue there is no logic behind the logic of the universe, and yet in the absence of primal logic one is compelled to believe the logic of the universe creates the logic of our minds!. (aka Darwinism)

If there is no God, there is Evolution!.
And if there is Evolution, God will evolve!.

I wouldn't say it IS God but it does point to God!. A creator is the only explanation of the orgins of the universe!. The universe is created by God himself!. Albert Einstein, one of the smartest men to walk the earth, even admited that the only explanation of the universe was a creator!. The postion of our planet, distance from the sun, size of the earth, it's all perfect!. Any inch away from the sun we freeze up!. Any inch closer to the sun we burn!.
