Question: What is the difference between tradition and "intelligent" tradition !?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
I think there may be two perspectives to interpret this!. tradition is usually what creates the mentality and coherence of a nation, its myths, its religion, its!.!.!. "spontaneously" (meaning without an interference) transmitted cultural inheritance!. "intelligent" tradition can be the more refined version of it!.!.!. that tradition which has lost its anonymity and includes definite names of people who created it!.!.!. artistic tradition, scientific tradition, philosophical tradition, etc!.

the other perspective can be seen as a difference between what's generally accepted as inherited values (from myths, religion!.!.!. to national poets, men of science, etc, meaning including both sides of the equation above) and what a person or a group of people (a cultural trend, for instance) can accept as valuable between all those items!. To be more specific!.!.!. the difference between the general tradition of the novel as a literary genre (which includes everything from Homer's epic poems, going through Cervantes, Balzac, Proust, etc!. till nowadays novel) vs!. what a certain novelist can consider as valuable from that entire history (meaning he can love Proust and hate Balzac)!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I've not heard the two expressions, but if I had to hazzard a guess, I'd say intelligent traditions have solid reasons behind them!. A young bride's first Thanksgiving alone where her new hubbie!. He watches her as she cuts the legs off the carcas and stuff them in the cavity!. She uses no other stuffing!. Odd, he says, why do you do it that way!? She says, I don't know!. That's just they Mom always did it!. Let's call her!. "Mom, why to you always cut the legs and pope's nose of the end of the turkey, use that as stuffing, and nothing else goes inside the turkey!?" Mom says, I don't know, hon, that's just what Grandma always did!." Bridey makes another call, "Grams!? Why do you tuck the legs and rear off the turkey into its cavity!?"

"Lands sakes, honey, If I didn't do that, I could never fit a big bird in my tiny oven!."

A not so intelligent tradition!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
