Children and property rights automatically cede to a spouse and not a room-mate!. It is easier for a couple to adopt than an individual!. Some neighborhoods do not allow unmarried people to live in them!. Residency requirements are easier for spouses!. Many laws allow exemptions for taxes for gifts and the like for spouses!. Many laws criminalize behaviour between unmarried people that is legal for married ones!. Married people can't be forced to testify against each other in court!. There's also the right of notice in courts, joint filing for actions, mutually binding agreements, and so on!. There are insurance benefits, employment benefits, tuition and education benefits, and family rates on hundreds of things!. Bereavement leave!. Pregnancy leave!. And let's not forget some levels of social perception - a married couple that stays together for decades gets applause, while an unmarried one is accused of being unable to commit!. Marriage has a psychologically different feel to people who are in (or not in) it no matter how long they may be cohabitating!. A gay person dies and their family that may have hated them has the rights to all their property!. The partner that helped them earn and save - zilch! And it is less than 20 years since gay sex was illegal in most states! So how long would it take for a wave of repression to set the clock back!? Half that long maybe, if progress doesn't continue to define gay rights as equal to straight people's rights!. And why shouldn't a gay person have to pay child support if they leave their partner saddled with kids they adopted together!?
