Question: What is superstition!?
Why is it part of the human mind- set!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Superstition is a part of our mind set because it is a part of who we are, what we are!.
We are creatures of logic and it is human nature to add scientific logic and reason to something unexplained!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Superstition (Latin superstes, "standing over", "set above") is a belief or notion, not based on reason or knowledge!. The word is often used pejoratively to refer to supposedly irrational beliefs of others, and its precise meaning is therefore subjective!. It is commonly applied to beliefs and practices surrounding luck, prophecy and spiritual beings!.

To medieval scholars the word was applied to and beliefs outside of or in opposition to Christianity; today it is applied to conceptions without foundation in, or in contravention of, scientific and logical knowledge!. The earliest English uses of the word in the modern era refer critically to Catholic practices such as censing, rosaries, and other practices that Protestants believed went beyond - or were set up above -beliefs that seemed unfounded or primitive in the light of modern knowledge!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is part of who we are to explain things as soon as possible!. TO make sense of what we cannot make sense of!. If we questioned every unexplainable aspect of our lives to the utmost scrutiny, we would never progress!. Superstition is part of our imagination!. Imagination is imperitive in understanding our universe!. Without imagination, we would have never imagined the universe is composed of an unseeable fabric of energy composed of the three dimesions of space and one of time!. We would have never imagined atoms, which we can never ever see, thus we would have never tested for them and no atomic theory would exist!. With no imagination, we would accept things as they are, what we see, and leave it at that!. Imagination is necessary for an intelligent species to evolve intellectually!. And, superstitions go hand in hand with imagination!. We HAVE to reach a middle ground of reason and faith!. A purely superstitious species cannot intellectually evolve, because we would apply irrational explainations to everything and leave it at that!. A purely logical species cannot evolve intellectually because why explain what you cannot see!? And we'd also doubt everything around us, and never progress, driving ourselves mad with what ifs, rather than survive!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

superstition is the belief that things are connected that are NOT connected, such as picking up a tails-up penny and "bad luck"
It is part of the human mind-set becaues the brain is not logical, it is associative!. i took artificial intelligence in college, and the way people make computer that understand human handwriting or voice is to teach them associations!.
a concept is a group of neurons that are lit in yoru mind!. if one group of neurons fires and they are connected to (most of) another group, the entire 2nd group will light up because their connections are strong among each other!. like filling in the blanks!.
most programs for computer are written using logic!. but it is impossible to write "if this then that" and "choose beween 5 options based on variable x" type logic to learn organic things like handwriting!. it is too complex and you'd need a comuter the size of the earth (or something like that) to understand human handwriting! but if you teach it associatively, a neural net can learn!.
but the side-effect of this associative "this goes with that" learning is that associations happen that are illogical!. i have one in my mind that is pure superstitious!. for my first 2 cars i had a streering wheel cover!. for the 3rd car i didn't and it crashed!. now, it crashed cuz it was a cheep US car with bald tires and i was going too fast iin the rain, but i feel un-comfortable now without a streeting wheel cover!. i somehow now feel that cars without streering wheel covers crash -- because of the stress of the crash my brain made this false association between driving cars with no streering wheel covers and crashing!.
unlike religious people, i dont' think this is "good luck" or any metaphysical enegery but only an association in my mind!.

so yes, superstition is hardcoded in human brains even tho it is wrong!. you can say that like some drugs and foods have bad side effects (carrots are good for you, but eat too many and your fingers turn red) superstition is a *side effect* of having nerual-net that are as smart as they are for brains!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Superstition began in a manor of belief similar and sometimes intertwined with religion!. For instance walking under ladders is bad luck because the Egyptians believed that the triangle was a sacred form that should never be broken!. And the shape under a ladder is a triangle so by walking under it you would break the triangle and create bad luck!. Black cats, knocking on wood, Friday the 13th, salt over your shoulder, all of these have roots that go WAY back to a time when religion and superstition were sister beliefs!. Remember we use to burn witches who didn't sink:)Www@QuestionHome@Com
