It all changes when you define "string" by the definition proposed in String Theory, in which vibrational strings at the sub-quantum level are the building blocks of all known matter, and the forces that govern them are the glue holding the universe together (very crudely paraphrased but there really is nothing 'simple' about it)!. In this case, "Strings" are very different from your run-of-the-mill ball of twine!.

In general, if we are really only talking about the stuff made of fiber, string refers to the concept of string, or an unspecified quantity of string!. "Bring me some string"- you typically end up with a mass or a package of some type of string!. "Bring me a piece of string" has a more defined concept to it- you expect a useful length of precut material, typically about a foot or so in length, to do your dastardly binding project!.

All thing considered, foxes can have fun with pieces of string, masses of string, balls of string, and even those pesky vibrational strings just fine!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It depends on the context you use it in!. On its own, without later referring to the other, it would mean simply that - string!. In which case there would be no difference!.
However, if you were to introduce it as 'a string' at the beginning, and afterwards allude to 'a piece of string', you would be saying that your piece, is made up of string!.
But since they are made up of the same things!.!. -!.-" A piece of string is just something redundant made up by some bored person who felt the need to describe string as 'a piece'!. 'a piece' then becomes something extra you add on, if you feel like having more words in your essays, etcetera!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A piece by definition is smaller than the whole, so a piece of string would be smaller than string!. !.!.!. and that's the truth =PWww@QuestionHome@Com

If you are referring to a fabric string: Nothing!

All fabric string ends, therefore it's all simply a piece of string!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There is no difference in quality, but in quantity!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
