"When in Rome, do as the Romans" is an expression which is used to advise people to adapt to the culture of places that they visit!. "Don't set your own rules when you are someone's guest"!. The proverb has been traced back to the 1530 'Commonplace Book' and it is first cited in the United States in 'Voyages of Radisson' (1885)!. The proverb is often attributed to Saint Ambrose (c!.340-397), whose advice to Saint Augustine read: Si fueris Romae, Romano vivito more; si fueris alibi, vivito sicut ibi ('When you are in Rome live in the Roman style; when you are elsewhere live as they live elsewhere') English diviine Jeremy Taylor (1613-67) also used the proverb!." From "Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings" by Gregory Y!. Titelman (Random House, New York, 1996)!.

Yes, I do agree!. Of course being yourself is always best but sometimes you have to make necessary adjustments to fit in!. You have to 'blend' with people around you, not really embracing their ways but at least, show an effort that you respect them and their culture!. We live in a diverse world and if we insist on following our norm ways everywhere we go, we'd find nothing but conflict!. Sometimes you have to bend without compromising your real self!. Strong and pliant like a bamboo, that is!.

In the book, LOTR 2, Frodo said to Faramir!.!.!." we have no such custom but if we are guests, we bow to our host and thank him!.!.!."!. Which is quite correct!. If you are with people different from who you are, you have to understand them and show them respect, and what respect could be more greater than understanding and learning their ways!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is a saying that is intended to tell people to have respect for the customs and cultures of other people and their countries!. It also asks us to try new things, experience the culture and everyday life of the place your are in!. If you travel to Italy, you should at least attempt to learn some phrases and basic questions and pleasantries out of respect for the people in whose home you are a guest!. When you are a guest in someone's else's country, you should be on your best behavior, and you make your best effort to learn about the people, the history, and take in the beauty of their lives!. It honors them, it honors you to do so!. When in Rome, do as the Romans do!.!.!.Ciao!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have traveled to and lived in many parts of the world and in many cases tried to live like the locals!. I did this partly because I wanted to blend in more (avoid criminals) and understand another aspect of myself, that is of human nature!. Some habits I picked up would not be good to bring back to Canada and others were useful!. But the thing that helped the most was to see how 'my way' of doing things in some places, makes no sense and in those situations, we can really see ourselves as only being one piece of a puzzle, instead of seeing ourselves as the center of the universe, as we sometimes do at home!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You should always respect your neighbors culture, and be tolerance to others!. However, you should never comprise yourself to the point that your are dismissing your norms in your life!. You always have to be you, and nothing should change that!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i don't eat gross stuff!. If you come over my house and don't want to eat tater tots that's your loss!. I'll try new things though and see what good stuff you got!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
