Memories are bits of information from the past that have been stored, but can be reconstructed in the present in a variety of ways!. Including that is the perception about the information being re-membered!. Memories stay with us as long as we wish them to!. It is believe that the information is likely stored for life, but we actively keep those memories 'alive'!.

Memories are not living in the present though!. No matter how we construct or reconstruct the past, they essentially amount to living in the past!. And of course, they represent a particular perception of the past!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There are a couple of theories on that!. One is that they do fade depending on how intense consciousness was when they were burned into the brain!.
