In the beginning the acquisition of simple 'things' made life a bit easier!. When ancient people started trading 'things' then their acquisition became an alternative to hunting and gathering as a way to survive!.

These days it's pretty much a learned response!. And it's a response which, while difficult, is well worth the effort to 'un-learn'!.
