Question: Question for exam abt Plotinus!?

The philosopher was a professor and a spiritual guide whose goal was not to set forth his vision of the universe, but to mould his disciples by means of spiritual exercises!. Thus Plotinus' writings are above all either sermons or textual explanations; often they are transcripts of his public classes!. Discuss even in the light of your own reading and your experience of Plotinus' philosophy!.

What I like is that he is similar to so many great teachers, basically teaching the same thing!. To separate the soul from body and mind, thus making the soul strong and independent, the one thing that can survive death!. He was said to be ashamed to have a body and have to tend to its meager needs!.

He is one of the first to introduce the idea that eudaimonia is attainable only within consciousness and that it is consciousness that is united with the One or God!. His treatment of what a soul is par none!.

And much of his work teaches how to do that, with some very practical methods, which is rare to see from the era!. We are lucky to have such good translations!.

It is odd that he has so many critics but I guess it is always that way with those who speak the stark truth that stretches far beyond what the mind is capable of!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
