Originally from silence, when silence is not tolerated, labelling impressions and wording them starts and it is that which lends to thoughts!. When we want to separate and grab our own identity ( other than what the Nature has given us ) , we break from silence, create a mythical world ( ego ) of our own through thoughts!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As far as where they originate!.!.!. I will have to agree with James D, but instead of limiting it to just "external" stimulus, I would say ALL stimulus!.

And!.!.!. as we are Being(s) of vibrating energy!.!.!. everything is a stimulus!

But what about the other side of the question!.!.!.
What happens to a thought when it leaves your conscious mind!?

This is how Seth answers this question!.!.!.

"It does not simply disappear!. You can learn to follow it, but you are usually frightened of turning your attention away from its intense focus in three-dimensional existence!. Therefore, it seems that the thought disappears!. It seems also that your subjectivity has a mysterious unknown quality about it, and that even your mental life has a sort of insidious dropping-off point, a subjective cliff over which thoughts and memories fall, to disappear into nothingness!. Therefore, to protect yourself, to protect your subjectivity from drifting, you erect various psychological barriers at what you suppose to be the danger points!.

Instead, however, you can follow these thoughts and emotions simply by realizing that your own reality continues in another direction, besides the one with which you mainly identify!. For these thoughts and emotions that have left your conscious mind will lead you into other environments!.

These subjective openings through which thoughts seem to disappear are in fact like psychic warps, connecting the self that you know with other universes of experience -- realities where symbols come to life and thoughts are not denied their potential!."

Thoughts are composed in the mind, but they originate from an external stimulus!.
Action & reaction!.
Nothing exists purely in a void, only in relation to other!.

Example: You ask this question (external stimulus), my mind examines it (thoughts)!.

And when I say mind, I do not mean brain!.
Brain is a physical device!.
Mind is consciousness & beyond the physical!.

Mind is metaphysical or spiritual, and in the wider concept one could say that mind is god (if one believed in such things), so, by extention one could say that thoughts come from god - this is the meaning of inspiration (to breathe in the divine essence)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Consider that concepts are the constructs we have so labeled, thoughts emerge from physical and the biological functions of viable infant bodies!.

When enough simple actions and reactions of grey matter have been recorded by neurons, a complex neuro net would form from those chaotic functions!. Conceptual patterns observable and recognizable would emerge as waves of electrical/chemical signals within the body Those waves are what we now call thoughts and feelings!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

From external stimulus!. The mind reacts and that reaction is what we call a thought!. Sometimes thought is a reaction from another thought, but no matter how far we trace that linage back it will originate with a thought that was the result of an external stimulus, like a conversation, book, song, etc!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is consciousness from where thoughts originate!.
It is thought that brings energy
Body is also sustained by thought!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

From the memory in association with the consciousness!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
