Well, that would depend firstly upon what you consider to be "greatness!." One's acheivements and fame can transcend death!. For example, thousands of years later, we still follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and Aristotle!. The achievements of various human beings throughout history have been what has shaped and changed history itself!. But looking at it on an individual basis, independent of their impact on humanity, they could be meaningless!. Yes, I think so!. Death reduces all of our achievements to nothing!. And even if it benefits someone else after we are gone, then they will die someday too!. But even if it helps someone else, what good does that do me!?
