Freud described it as the "executive" of the rational faculty!. Like any good executive, it must know what is going on in the rest of the "corporation!." If it does not keep a good grip on reality, it gives up too much power to the id, or to the superego!.

But the ego is also the "I" in "I am!." And as no one wants to give up their "I", this quote is appropriate:

"Men have been taught that the ego is the synonym of evil, and selflessness the ideal of virtue!. But the creator is the egoist in the absolute sense, and the selfless man is the one who does not think, feel, judge or act!. These are functions of the self!.

"Here the basic reversal is most deadly!. The issue has been perverted and man has been left no alternative—and no freedom!. As poles of good and evil, he was offered two conceptions: egoism and altruism!. Egoism was held to mean the sacrifice of others to self!. Altruism—the sacrifice of self to others!."
"The Soul of an Individualist,” For the New Intellectual; Ayn Rand

Why is there that black-and-white dichotomy between preserving the "I" and sacrificing it!? Because of the definition of "altruism":

"Altruism: (Alter: other) In general, the cult of benevolence; the opposite of Egoism (q!.v!.)!. Term coined by Comte and adopted in Britain by H!. Spencer!.
1!. For Comte Altruism meant the discipline and eradication of self-centered desire, and a life devoted to the good of others; more particularly, selfless love and devotion to Society!. In brief, it involved [ ] self-abnegat[ion]!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!."

Eradication!? A life devoted to others!? Self-abnegation!?

When you were a tiny child and another child tried to take one of your toys out of your hands, didn't you get angry, fight to keep it, and maybe cry if the other child was successful!? It was your ego, your "self", that caused it!.

The ego is "cause" in man's life!. Man is a volitional animal, unlike any other!. Without the ego, you would not have cared if that other child had taken your toy--altruism would instead have been the norm, and you would have said (if you could have said), "I'm glad you took my toy!. My duty on earth is to make you and everyone else happy!."

The ego says, "It is my job to make me happy!." Aristotle taught that happiness is man's primary goal!. Thomas Aquinas put that axiom into Christianity, and eventually it led us out of the Dark Ages!. Aristotle said man was intended to enjoy the beauty and fruits of the earth and of his labors!. When Aquinas said that, within one year, the world had it's first recorded event of a man climbing a mountain "just because it was there to be climbed!."

" I stand here on the summit of the mountain!. I lift my head and I spread my arms!. This, my body and spirit, this is the end of the quest!. I wished to know the meaning of things!. I am the meaning!.!.!.!.
"It is my eyes which see, and the sight of my eyes grants beauty to the earth!. It is my ears which hear, and the hearing of my ears gives its song to the world!. It is my mind which thinks, and the judgment of my mind is the only searchlight that can find the truth!.!.!.!.
"Whatever road I take, the guiding star is within me; the guiding star and the loadstone which point the way!. They point in but one direction!. They point to me!.!.!.!.
"I know not if this earth on which I stand is the core of the universe or if it is but a speck of dust lost in eternity!. I know not and I care not!. For I know what happiness is possible to me on earth!. !.!.!.
"I wished to find a warrant for being!. I need no warrant for being, and no word of sanction upon my being!. I am the warrant and the sanction!.!.!.
"It is my will which chooses, and the choice of my will is the only edict I must respect!.!.!.
"My happiness is not the means to any end!. It is the end!. It is its own goal!. It is its own purpose!."
"Anthem"; Ayn Rand

Even Thomas Jefferson made happiness the end goal, by guaranteeing us the "pursuit of happiness!."

And it is the ego which is the cause of the pursuit!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In spirituality, the human being is often conceived as being in the illusion of individual existence, and separated from other aspects of creation!. This "sense of doership" or sense of individual existence is that part which believes it is the human being, and believes it must fight for itself in the world, is ultimately unaware and unconscious of its own true nature!. This is ego!.

The ego is often associated with mind and the sense of time, which compulsively thinks in order to be assured of its future existence, rather than simply knowing its own self and the present!.

Where does it come from!? It is partly taught to us as children and the mind adjusts to that teaching, of 'you' vs 'me'!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Freud talks about the "id", the reality principle, which we are all born with, Then the "EGO" which is the pleasure principle (something that we desire and want), then the "super ego" which is the conscience!. It is usually the conscience which conflicts with the ego to tell us that maybe something is not right and that we cant always have what we want!. Someone who hasnt got a very good conscience has a very big ego and thinks too much about themselves and what "they" want!. You cant actually get rid of your ego altogether, but always let your conscience dictate what is the right and just thing to do and this will help guide you a better way!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

EGO is a feeling which makes you feel that I am Means I exist and i can survive without any one and i dont need to care about some one if has no intentions about me
this kind of feeling is amplified by the peple which are either close to us or which we idealize and the support and shows that they have ego and they dont need to depend on any one!.
But man is a social animal and cannot survive alone so we have to except some times which is not exceptable to us for the sake to keep people attatched with them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
