Question: Have you ever had a sudden insight that a work colleague is an "Alexander VI" !?
"men are so simple, and so subject to present necessities, that he who seeks to deceive will always find someone who will allow himself to be deceived!. One recent example I cannot pass over in silence!. Alexander VI did nothing else but deceive men, nor ever thought of doing otherwise, and he always found victims; for there never was a man who had greater power in asserting, or who with greater oaths would affirm a thing, yet would observe it less; nevertheless his deceits always succeeded according to his wishes, because he well understood this side of mankind!."

I've seen many like him!. Most do well!. In fact, most people that follow Machiavelli's teachings go far in business!.

Until they crash!. And most of them do!. They get out on a limb, make a commitment or promise that requires others to bend over backwards, and no one does!. The rest of the workers are so fed up, that they do nothing to offer support or help!. In fact, their closest friends experience Schadenfreude at their fall!.

People like this makes for a terrible work environment!. The secret is to NOT play their game because you will always lose!. Maintain your integrity at all costs!. Make sure your boss (and, if necessary, their boss) knows what is going on at all times!. Keep a paper trail -- nothing secret!. Email and post your weekly status!. Include problems encountered, risks you've identified, and solutions that you (or your part of the team) came up with and always give credit (helps your credibility -- if you give credit, higher ups believe you when you take credit)!.

Realize that the paper trail may not do you any good if your Prince is really a good player!. But if he is not, you are covered!.

also, when you realize that you are working for one of these nuts, QUITELY request a transfer to a different project/department!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
