You can be 1 feet away from where the tree falls, you can be 20 feet away from where the tree falls!. When it does fall you DO NOT hear it immediately when it hits!. It takes TIME for the sound to travel to you ears!. In the Time that it hits, you were not there! But yet it did come to you!. Why!? The waves that sensory systems would respond to as sound will clearly exist!. In the absence of a sensor we could easily say no sound exists!. The word sound then is dependent on perception!. The waves do exist and if the perceptual system were present the waves would create the perception of sound!. So if we say the waves are sound, and many people do, the presence or absence of a perception is unimportant!. The wave is there!. and sound is there!.
