It was some kind of cell!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) is the first notable living thing, and responsible for creating the Earth's atmosphere through photosynthesis (ie: taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, which created what we now thrive on)!. This was about 3!.5 - 4 billion years ago!. However, even before that, there were prokaryotes, single-celled bacteria lacking a nucleus or any kind of cell membrane!. The first animal!.!.!. no one knows for sure!. However, a theory fairly accepted now is that sea sponges were the first animal life on Earth!.!.!. thus, we're all decendents of sea sponges!. And eventually there were several other sea-based creatures to spring up, and eventually they took to land, and here we are today! But it's definitely certain that life began in the oceans (which covered the planet at the time)!.
