I think what you have in mind is the "ex nihilo" principle!. Which effectively states that something cannot come out of nothing!. Its the broader and a more fundamental principle than one that focuses solely on the question of life's origins!.

I am not aware (I think) of any specific epistemological/metaphysical principle that addresses only the question of the origins of life!. Of course, there might be one!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Law of Identity
"The traditional law is perhaps best identified with the theorem x = x!.!.!." [Aristotle's "Existence exists!."]
http://www!.ditext!.com/runes/i!.html

"A thing is—what it is; its characteristics constitute its identity!. An existent apart from its characteristics, would be an existent apart from its identity, which means: a nothing, a non-existent!."
Leonard Peikoff “The Analytic-Synthetic Dichotomy,”
Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology, 142

An existent apart from its characteristics refers to the identity of "existence!." Something from nothing is called "ex nihilo!." Christianity rejects it!. (A few ancient philosophers tried to make the case for it!.)

What this means is: the things WITHIN existence (like life) are its characteristics, and we all admit that matter does not disappear, it just changes its form!. Dust to dust, etc!.

"Existence and identity are not attributes of existents, they are the existents !. !. !. !. The units of the concepts “existence” and “identity” are every entity, attribute, action, event or phenomenon (including consciousness) that exists, has ever existed or will ever exist!."
Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology, 74

But perhaps you are thinking of NATURALISM!. Naturalism uses the same Law of Identity!.
"Naturalism: Naturalism, challenging the cogency of the cosmological, teleological, and moral arguments, holds that the universe requires no supernatural cause and government, but is self-existent, self-explanatory, self-operating, and self-directing, that the world-process is not teleological and anthropocentric, but purposeless!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!."
