While I agree about the loss of a love, I'm not sure about the drowning part!. It's always "by the riverside" not " in the water" or something similar!. I dismiss any notion of "lay my bones" literally meaning being buried there!. To me it sounds more like going to down to the river and listening to sound of it and remembering - and in that remembering, returning to a time when his soul was at peace!.
