I'm sorry, I do not understand the word 'refined' about culture! A CULTURE can be OLD enough, can be RICH enough, can be DEVELOPED------but not refined! Well, have I missed the key point of your using the term "refined"!? When I go through our culture, I do find it (honestly) so-called refined perhaps! I do smell a little of the 'reason' behind your question---er---did you mean their humbleness!? Their being obliged to everything!? or anything like these!? In that case, you would find Indian Culture so 'refined' & so old enough; at the same time so trditional!. How a culture could be 'REFINED" (with FULL respect to Jap culture) where there is Hari Kiri
(suicide by declaring openly)!? If you go for 'fineness' in any culture (of course that should be CULTURE, not CUSTOM)----you would find so many fineness! Comparing between two cultures, you may verdict one out of that two as so-called 'refined', I suppose!. Probably you know, sometimes at some situation, how conservative the Japs are! Yes, and it extends farther beyond that!. The Japanese have strived for greatness since the mid 1800's!. It was the fanatical pursuit of this that resulted in the Rape of Nanking and their behaviors in WWII!. Since the surrender in 1945, the Japanese still continue to refine themselves at a scarey rate, taking advantage of any and all open avenues for greatness, even in the face of active sanctioning by not being allowed to keep and grow a standing military any longer!. They have assimilated a large portion of American culture since that time, integrating it with their own!. This would be the definition of refined!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i'm not so sure!.

For one thing not so long ago they acted like savages in trying to increase their empire;and i make no apologies for saying that!.
On the other hand i understand that they have there in Japan,hardly any crime!.

Before commenting further on the above,i would say that a probable "refined culture" would be one of a western-type culture;And it seems to me that not so long ago that the japanese nation was not a western nation!.
What does all this mean,if anything!?And is one "REFINED" WHO DOESNT HAVE ANY REALISTIC APPRECIATION OF ART OR MUSIC!? i say this because it does seem like the western notion of a refined culture,has to do with certain popular norms,of popular ideas such that (western)Art and therfore culture,has a high importance-not least because it "refines"by teaching or rather showing us something(like a more pleasant,controlled,and i may say a less cruel or less darwinian lifestyle)!.

What does it mean to have a "refined" culture!? I think all cultures are refined in context of that particular culture!. And I think all cultures will accuse every other culture of being unrefined!.!.!. because that is what ethnocentrism is about!.
