Question: I want to know your opinion!?
i have to write a 500 word essay in one of my math classes on whether i think math was discovered or invented!.

i am leaning more towards the discovery theory, b/c if math was invented then i can invent that 2 + 2 = 5!.

but that is just my opinion, and i would like to hear others so i can compare what others think!.

so if you could just say whether you think it was invented or discovered and if you want you can say why!.

thanks!!

ohh, and i will give 10 points to the first good answerWww@QuestionHome@Com

I think it was discovered!. Our brains are more observant than we think: there are many cases in which people come up with numerical concepts, and these concepts are later discovered to apply to science, nature and society!.

The Fibonacci sequence comes to mind, as well as music's constant use of numbers that are powers of two (in most musical pieces, melodies last 4 to 8 bars, and common time signatures are usually based around half, quarter, eighth or sixteenth notes)!.

Even if you use a different counting system (roman numberals, binary, hexadecimal), the logic behind them is always the same!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Truths are discovered and never invented!. Like gravity or the water cycle, it was discovered!. Perhaps it was given to man by God!. In Genesis, God tells us that certain people were the father of music, metallurgy, animal husbandry and so on!. We know that there were civilizations that no longer exists that had information and capabilities that we can not duplicate!. Rock walls which have rocks so large that we have no mechanism or combination of mechanisms that can even dislodge those rocks, much less cut them in a quarry, carry them across a swamp and put them in place so accurately that even a piece of paper will not fit between them!.

One thing we know for certain!. Math is an absolute truth!. No census can find the right answer and all people accept it as fact (truth)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i think it was invented to make things simpler for people!. human nature is one where we like to take the easy way out of things and math does make things simpler!. we also like things to be exact, to save trouble in the future, so math helps with that too!. i dont know how people could have "discovered" math because how could it have already been there!? did exponents suddenly appear out of thin air!? or did the pathagorean theorum happen to be carved out of stone by lightening or some other natural phenomenon!? i dunno, so i think it was invented!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Mathematics is a description of reality, and how it works!. As such, I think every theory, law, etc!. of math was discovered--we are discovering how reality works!.

For instance, that a triangle's 3 angles always add up to 180 degrees (on a flat surface) is not something that was invented!. Such a property exists independently in nature regardless of whether anyone knows about it or not!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I do not really want to do your homework for you, but this time I cannot resist because I have the answer to your question and no one else does!. It is a family secret that has been passed from one generation to another!. It was definitely discovered!. One of my ancestors found it under a rock in ancient Mesopotamia when he turned it over looking for grubs to eat!. Other people have not been so lucky!. For everyone else, math was and is a combination of observation and development!.

Edit: My definition of invention is to come up with something, whether real or imagined, that has not existed before!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Math was discovered by common sense and logic!. By studying other natural structures in nature!. The way it is written on paper has nothing to do with math!. Its just a way of understanding, just like reading or sign language or Brail!. Maybe on some other planet 2+2=13!. Its a universal way of understanding!. Socrates studied nature to make logic of how and why things are built!. I hated Math in Highschool because of the way it was taught!. It was taught as something I needed to know and not given any logic of why I needed it!. Now I am in the real world!. math is my life!.

2+2=5 These were just the shapes chosen to represent math!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

well in my opinion i would say math was invented a long time ao, people invented math and theory!. There is such thing as discovering math because i have heard that a long time ao math was discovered from the egyptians and i would go with inventing and a little with discoveing

PLZZ, give me the 10 points, it will mean allotWww@QuestionHome@Com

I think maths is a discovered invention!. The logic of it has always applied but it has been invented to actually apply it!. I think of time in the same way, it's always been there but we organised it to make sense!. Hope this is useful xxWww@QuestionHome@Com

Mathematics is a universal language, so it was discovered!. 2+2 always equaled 4 regardless of time!.
What we invented was quicker and easier ways of doing math, ie!., calculators and computers!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think it was discovered becuz ppl had to figure out sometime that if they have 1 cow and get two more that they have 3 cows and that they didnt just wait for some1 to invent itWww@QuestionHome@Com

All knowledge is uncovered!. Education even means drawing knowledge out!.

The Universe had to be created with the knowledge of the Universe in it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i think the number system was invented but all sorts of mathmatical systems and equations were discovered!. so it kinda goes hand in hand!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Discovered! Example: I ordered a 10inch pizza, they asked if I wanted it cut into 4 pieces or 6 pieces!. I said 4, cuz I don't think I could eat 6!. lol!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
