He sat in a pitch dark place (inside a metal fireplace as it happens,) and imagined the whole world away, as if it were an illusion!. When he tried to prove the existence of anything without benefit of observable data he concluded that his thoughts presupposed an existent person!. He went on to describe the "world" as a perception with a perceive and a source and thereby posited a proof of God!. (Someone had to "send" the messages Descartes senses were "imagining!.") Thus "Cogito ergo sum" means my thinking is a proof of my existence!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

he was trying to find what he could be certain of!. he found nothing except the fact that he was a mind, wondering, and thinking!. he could say nothing else for certain because it is possible that he would be stuck in some matrix like scenario, so everything else could be a lie!. but he is thinking, he is not sure what exactly that "he" is, but he is sure that it thinks, he is sure that that thinking thing exists, and that thinking thing is him!.
