I think its a kind of trick phrase played by the ego!.
We want the world to be notchaotic and have some fundamentals running through our lives - some changes make us jittery!.

I think all humanity is capable of doing and being like anything humans have been proven to be capable of - so that nothing is out of character for a human!.

So to be out of character is a way of explaining something about someone as a temporary lapse - a self reassurance for normalizing the situation!.


I don't actually think we have fixed character that self or others can know - but then I am multiple and chaotically unpredictable!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

someone that is acting out of character is doing something that is against their nature or who is doing some unlike them, something that goes against who they claim to be!.

An example would be someone of strong religious faith suddenly acting out against religion, that would be very out of character because they are doing something that is not like them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

a) a husband not dressed as a clown
b) me not behaving as I might be anticpated to act!. (out of character can only be adjudged if you know the person well otherwise it may be a misjudgement in that you were not aware of the scope of the person's character or behaviour)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Or, more seriously, it means acting outside of expectations - the expectations related to what we think of as a person, a personality!.

This question reminds me, I was listening to Bob Dylan singing "Like a Rolling Stone" today!. The lyrics made me think about how we define who or what we are day to day, and how we cling to that definition so fearfully!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
