Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Modern science speaks of evolution of species, but actually it is the spirit soul, the real person, which evolves in different material bodies in the cycle of repeated birth and death!. It is described in the Vedic literature that there are 8 400 000 different forms of life within the material universe and the conditioned souls transmigrate through all of them in the gradual process of elevation!. The highest form of life is the human form which is attained very rarely and after evolution through millions of lifetimes in different lower bodies!. Therefore in a sense we are already highly elevated, being rewarded by nature with this precious human birth!. The question is what should we do while in a human body to become further elevated, meaning to get free from the endless circle of repeated births and deaths!? Vedanta sutra, the codes of conclusive knowledge, answers to that: athato brahma jignyasa!. “Now, (in the human form) is the time to inquire about the nature of the Absolute Truth!.“ This is the beginning of human life and the beginning of real elevation -to inquire about one’s ultimate duty and to act accordingly!. This is confirmed in the Bhagavad Gita, spoken about 5000 years ago by Lord Shri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead and the highest authority (BG 16!.24): tasmac chastram pramanam te karyakarya-vyavasthitau jnatva sastra-vidhanoktam karma kartum iharhasi TRANSLATION “One should therefore understand what is duty and what is not duty by the regulations of the scriptures!. Knowing such rules and regulations, one should act so that he may gradually be elevated!.” There are three sources from where one can get guidance on how to become elevated!. These three are shastra, guru and sadhu!. Shastra is the revealed scriptures of the world which contain information aimed at the elevation of humanity!. Guru is the authoritative person in knowledge of the Absolute Truth, who has realized the purport and conclusions of the shastras and lives according to them!. And sadhu are the saintly persons, from the past and contemporary, which are factually elevated in spiritual life by dint of their following shastra and guru!. So, if one takes guidance from these three sources and applies their teachings in one’s life, he/she can become gradually elevated and ultimately achieve perfection by going back home, back to Godhead – the ultimate destination of the living being!. This is confirmed in Shri Isopanishad Mantra 14: sambhutim ca vinasam ca yas tad vedobhayam saha vinasena mrityum tirtva sambhutyamritam asnute TRANSLATION One should know perfectly the Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna and His transcendental name, form, qualities and pastimes, as well as the temporary material creation with its temporary demigods, men and animals!.
