Position:Home>Philosophy> If I take a philosophy class, what exactly would it consist of?Question: If I take a philosophy class, what exactly would it consist of!? I need either a philosophy class or an ethics class, and I can't decide which one to take!.!.mainly because I'm not entirely sure what is covered in a philosophy class!. I have a hard time thinking in terms of symbolim-would that be a problem!?
Thanks for your help!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: If you have a hard time thinking about symbolism, stay away from Symbolic Logic (I personally love it) but it requires a lot of interpretation that may seem counter intuitive at first, but it really isn't!. If you really don't know what Philosophy is try taking a general philosophy class!. I bet you'll learn a lot of interesting things you'll probably never use, but it will give you a deeper understanding of how things are!. When I took my first general philosophy I started arguing more, because I realized that a lot of things people said didn't make sense!. If you don't really care about Philosophy, I think ethics is a good way to go!. I'm not saying ethics is useless or anything of the sort, but you can apply ethics to your personal life and learn how to make hard decisions easier to make!. Try wiki-ing philosophy and ethics, maybe that can help you a little more than what we've answered!.!.!. Ethics is a branch of plilosophy, others being epistomoligy(how you know or don't know what you think you know), philosophy of religion, death or existential philosophy!. Confused yet!? Philosophy is a broad subject!. In a basic class you will probably talk about the Greeks, Plato,ect!. and a general overview of philosophy!. Leave your personal feelings at the door though!. The idea is to challenge your attitudes and make you give logical reasons for thinking or believing in a certain way!. It's fun!. Go for it and maybe make a career of it!. It's all about learning to look at things from a different perspective!. You learn to analyze how YOU personally think!. I took Phil 2200, which is general philosophy!. Great class!.!.!. I would take it a thousand times over!. You don't have to think about symbolism much!.!. You do a lot of reading about what other people think!. Ethics is covered in a basic philosophy class!.!. but honestly the ethic part was pretty boring!. If you want to get a clue on what you'll be reading look up Descartes Meditations or try reading Russel's "Why I am not a christian"!. That's another thing, If you are a strong Christian!.!. be careful!.!. some professors make it out to be anti-christian when really it's not!. It just shows you different aspects of simple things!. Things you would NEVER in a million years question!. I definitely reccommend it!.
