The Catholic and Orthodox churches have a process by which deceased members get put in a list of people whose example we should follow!. They are then known as Saints!. (The term can have other meanings in different circumstances) For you to be known as Saint Haberdashersmaid, your life would be examined in great detail to decide whether you were really a holy person!. One individual gets the job of trying to prove that you weren't and he is known as the devil's advocate!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The 'devil' is the God's factotum and her duty in that world is either to be your defender or your accuser!. Doing the right thing or the wrong one doesn't belong to what is supposed to be 'good' or 'bad'!. For example, cheating on your husband, because he doesn't provide sex fulfillment for your, is ok; the devil stands by your decision and he will be your defender forever!. So, the point of a devil's advocate is not to be the human beings' abductor!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Despite the name, Devil's Advocate is quite helpful!. When my friends approach me in indecision, I often do what they would expect of me!.

I help them outline all of the consequences of their suggested actions!. I enjoy go so far as to tell them that I am neither for nor against their decision!.

While I am showing my friends all sides to an argument, I am also showing indifference!. I believe that to be the true point of a Devil's Advocate!. By showing objectivity, the Devil's Advocate encourages the other person to make an INFORMED decision!.
