Morality is a code of behaviour based on a system of beliefs usually a religion or a philosophy while ethics is an exercise in what is considered reasonable or acceptable behaviour for a given society at a given time!.

What is considered ‘morally’ acceptable and unacceptable rarely changes while what is considered ‘ethically’ acceptable and unacceptable changes with the Administration or other ruling body!.

As such ‘ethics’, as used in the modern day world, has been hijacked becoming an exercise to protect against possible litigation as an ethical view is based on what is considered acceptable but no question is made as regards who is doing the considering!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE and that is one of the many things that is wrong with modern philosophy: it sets up dichotomies that are false, in order to confuse, as Kant wanted to be confusing with his "duty based" morality!.

Ayn Rand once famously said it is when you find yourself on a deserted island that you would need morality most, because you would have to have the metaphysical and epistemological clarity to know how to save your own life--to find clean water; to fish with no hooks or line; etc!.

Ethics is generally the science of figuring out how men ought to treat other men, including yourself: whether to be an altruist, or an egoist, etc!.

But the false dichotomy is that modern philosophy does not want us to believe in absolutes, so it sets "morality" against "ethics" and then declares there is no way to know which is which!. If modern philosophy taught you "which is which" you would have learned it as a child, since philosophy is all around children in the form of morality tales, Biblical stories, Superman vs!. Lex Luthor, etc!. What!? You thought Superman had to be "either-or"!? Either "moral" or "ethical" but not both!?

When any situation bears the marks having a "right" and a "wrong", the moral thing is the right thing, and that automatically makes it the ethical thing!.

When the situation is how to catch your next meal on a deserted island with no bow-and-arrow or fishing line then the "right and wrong" of morality has nothing to do with ethics regarding other people, but rather with rationality, i!.e!., clarity of mind, which means the ethics of valuing yourself enough to save your own life (egoism!.)

Those who want you to be confused over this issue are mystics, because they don't want you to have the clarity of mind it takes to decide issues of absolutes: is it wrong to take the candy bar because it is wrong, or because God will send me to hell!?

The absolute answer is "because it is wrong!." Is it wrong to steal baby formula to save your child's life!? No!. The life is more important unless it kills someones elses child to steal it; but you will have to make restitution if caught because the act of thievery hurt someone else!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ethics: Is an Atheist who chooses not to steal a candy bar from the gas-station because it's simply the wrong thing to do!.

Morality: Is the Christian who chooses not to steal a candy bar from the gas-staion because it's simply the thing that God will send him to Hell for!.

The moral thing to do is not always the right thing to do, but the ethical thing to do is the right thing to do!. I hope that makes sense to U!!Www@QuestionHome@Com
