at the universal or philosophical level the word refers to a concept!. the concept has it that nothing exists, that there exists nothing to constitute reality at any plane!. reality itself would not exist!.

but obviously the word does not refer to the current state of affairs!. therefore it refers only to an idea about a state of affairs in which there exist no states of affairs, a bit of a puzzle in itself!.

also, in a nothingness state of affairs there would be nothing to which the word nothingness would refer, and even the word would not exist!. therefore, the word never points to anything real or actual!. it points to nothing more than the difficult idea of there existing nothing!.

we have trouble with that because each plane of our being is made of the stuff that constitutes the corresponding plane of reality in which our being exists, occurs, or is actual!. no part of us is made of the so called stuff of nothingness!. as such, we lack the necessary condition for a trouble free understanding of the what the term implies!. so it's a bit difficult to fully wrap our minds or intuitions around it!. endless controversy over it at best might be a cool mental exercise in interlocution over speculative or modal metaphysics!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Nothingness describes the quality having to do with nothing!. If you have a set of things that would be something!. The absence of those things would constitute nothing!. When there's nothing, you can describe the set as having a nothingness about it!.

The trouble is that when you can distinguish "nothing" and it's "nothingness" you have something! You have nothingness and there is a somethingness quality to that!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Nothingness does not exist unless one is simply referring to the word nothingness!. Most people would think of a black hole or some other such object as nothingness, but it cannot be because that is, in actuality, something!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
