"Hobos; tramps; and bums!." My father, who grew up right after the Great Depression, remembers all three groups, and told me the difference when I was little!.

Hobos were travelers looking for work, sort of like people who today hold signs saying, "Will work for place to sleep;" or "a meal," etc!.

Tramps were travelers who didn't care if they worked or not!.

A hobo is a street person, or a homeless person, or a "bum"!. My kids use the term sort of affectionately!. They wouldn't call somebody who looked dangerous or scary a hobo!.
