Question: What would happen if a cemetery went out of business!?

government takes over and sells to someone else!. Plots are sacred so it would have to remain a cemetery!. Most states have a law that unless its a historical landmark (famous people buried there) and there are no living relatives to the dead, then the govenment can remove the plots!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Every place is a little bit different!. However, in the USA, there is an organization of cemetery operators that will assume operation if asked!. You first have to notify the state!. If the cemetery is a perpetual care facility, they are required by law to have an organization that will assume responsibility in the event the operators cease operation!. Otherwise, it is up to the descendants to provide care!. In my state (Texas) we have generous people that step up and take the responsibility without being asked!. We have a strong tradition of honoring our dead!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Being a country boy, I can tell you from experience: Nothing happens!. The cemetery just deteriorates!. There are many such cemeteries throughout the West: Nevada, Montana, Nebraska, Kansas!.!.!.
Sooner or later if someone decides the land is valueable for some purpose, the cemetery will be bulldozed or plowed under!.

Why would they !? They have a ready product that is always needed !. Unless they run out of land !. Then the up keep may put them out of business !. But the land or plots are not owned by the owners of the cemetery !.Www@QuestionHome@Com
