Question: Do you think computer viruses should count as life !?
I think it says something about human nature that the only form of life we have created so far is purely destructive!. We've created life in our own image!.

Oh crud - so depressing and so true!. Especially the malware bots which are a total menace and really do have a life of their own - not to mention zombie net! - gheezh!. I used to check out new computer security software and procedures once a year to defend myself online - now I do this once a month and I'm still barely keeping up!. I guess this applies to biological weapons too!. Some people suspect that AIDs may be a man-made disease that escaped from the lab due to improper procedures - or was even deliberately released!. What is wrong with us!? All that skill and intelligence - and this is what people choose to do with it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

no, they aren't alive, they're purely virtual, not physical, they have no ability to feel physically or emotionally or psychologically!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No!. But Dr!. Hawking's view is praiseworthy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Are computer viruses carbon based!?

I do think that anyone who wants to study 'brain theory' should have in depth interviews with Bill Gates and the wizards of Microsoft, et al!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

While I respect hawkings, that is about as dumb as anything I have heard in a while!.
There is nothing about a computer virus that would classify it as a life form!.
Only those familiar with literature and know nothing of biology would do so!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I saw Stephen Hawking in Woolworth the other day!. I crept up on him and leapt out in front of his wheel chair doing the Maori rugby dance!. In his computerised voice he said "what are you doing!?" I said "you're so feckin clever, you tell me!"Www@QuestionHome@Com

you know!.!.!.even biological viruses are being debated by scientists whether or not they are living organisms!.
so if it's computer viruses, surely it's not a living organism!.
dont misunderstood about computer viruses!.
A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer without permission or knowledge of the user!.
It's just a program like other softwares!. Only that they are programmed to do malicious things such as infecting computers and ruining the system!. That makes them considered as viruses!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

if you take the Ghost in the shell stand point, yes, but its unproven theory, so no!.

As praised in anime Ghost in the shell, it can be argued that mankind is nothing more but the subsequent colllection of information (DNA), likewise the computer system is a sea of information, it collects, arranges, interperates and uses this information in its own way unique to its self, this information and memory belongs to them and it is of their own memory and not belonging to anyone else but them, likewise the humans DNA and memory is unique to the individual and the memory theirs alone!. Thus, artificial intelligence will soon become a thinking, living entity created within the sea of information!.

Its a good story, thats all it is, a fairy tale because its based on evolution which is rubbish!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

only in the sense that parasites are also lifeWww@QuestionHome@Com

Your parent created you!. Aren't your parent human being!?

Hence, human being created human being in a natural way!.

Just think about yourself!. How your parent tried to create you after their own image!? Hard!.

As you got their DNA, somehow you would like them!.

Conclusively, human always create lives in human image and those lives are very health and good nature!.

Hence, get yourselves a girl or a boy then try hard to make babies!.

Computer virus does not have blood; it can be considered as being!. They are just some kind of noisy energy form!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

no
not unless you're going to count all programs as life!.

and i am not ready to recognise Pacman as a living enitity!.
i have enough trouble sleeping as it is!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He's a bit depressed it seems to me!. Ok, we have created computer virus and stuff, we have enough atomic bombs to destroy all life on planet earth, but we also have literature and french fries!. I think that guy should continue to do that Maori dance, might cheer him up a bit!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If we call them life then we must accept that we, as its creators, must be fundamentally destructive!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

wELL,WE SHOULDN'T CONSIDER THEM LIVING,BUT,YES,it is true, all of or so called "progress" has all been destructive in one way or another!.First, they destroy!.!.!.!.they pollute!.!.!.!.and they are coded that way!.!.!.so is that our purpose!?to destroy!.!.!.!.!.i wouldn't be surprised if the answer was yes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The answer, of course, depends on your definition of "life!." Previous commenters have mentioned that "they're not carbon-based"--but being carbon-based has nothing to do with if something is "life!." Scientists can easily visualize silicon-based life forms, for example!. Nor do most definitions of "life" include the word "physical" (or "emotional" or "intelligent")!. Some people define computer viruses as "life" because 1!. they have an independent existence (even if they need a host--but then, so do viruses and germs), 2!. they replicate themselves and pass their "offspring" to other hosts, and 3!. they can mutate to adapt to their environment in an attempt to stay "alive"!. Exactly the same as real-world viruses or bacteria do!. Most programs (like Pac Man) are not "alive" because they don't independently replicate themselves and pass their "offspring" along to new hosts!. Basically, the only way you can deny that computer viruses are not "alive" in the same way RW viruses/bacteria are "alive" is by including a physical component to your definition of what life is!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think that something should be considered alive only if it reproduces itself through DNA!.
