Position:Home>Philosophy> The Concept of Morality: Incest"?

Question:Incest is usually associated with pedophillia, but what it actually entails is sex between relatives: people joined by blood. I think almost everyone can agree that pedophillia is wrong. But what about incest in the context of 2 full-grown adults. I certainly do not condone incest, and I definitly would never practice it. In fact, it disgusts me. However, in a philisophical sense, I can't see why it would be MORALLY wrong. If all parties are willing and old enough to concent what is actually WRONG with it, apart from modern society's conception of it?? There is the arguement of birth defects. But what if the practicing parties were the same gender, or medically altered so they could not get pregnant (ie visectomy, etc.)? My opinion is, that in the case of parent and child, even if the parties are of age, it would still be wrong, regardless. But otherwise, I can't see an actual logical basis for why incest would be immoral, other than modern conception of morality. Any thoughts?

Interesting subject.
Well. I personally believe the types of love shared between family and lovers are very, very different.
The Hebrew have (I think) three different definitions for love. Well, I think there are more subtle shades to love, some of which should never be blended. I see these two ways of loving people as too unique, too important, too sacred, and too imprinted on a person to peacefully coincide within the same relationship. I don't see how that relationship could fruitfully evolve.
I believe it's a violation against what should be a chaste bond between family members; a healthy and essential bond because it provides family with the opportunity to nurture their relationship within a clear understanding of attachment uninterrupted by physical lust.
My personal opinion is that these shades of love are (and naturally should remain) apart...but that's just me.

First off I'm not "pro-incest". But I agree with you. My best explanation is that the major religions (Islam, Christian, Judaism, Hindu and Buddhism) all preach that incest is to be abhorred. Consequently, many of the basic laws of current countries are rooted in these religious precepts. If 2 consenting adults with full mental capacities want to engage in sex that doesn't harm a 3rd party (like a goat or child) I don't see anything morally wrong. I do see the argument that any offspring could be considered a 3rd party and proper measures would need to be taken to ensure that a baby that resembles "Sloth" from "Goonies" isn't created. Hate to be a Yes man, but I can't think of a good reason otherwise.

Philosophically, it is not immoral.

"Soul Mates and Twin Flames," Elizabeth Clare Prophet, "relates."

I can't wait to get home everynight after work and pack my uncle full of hot sticky love

been watching hollyoaks have we?
it's morally wrong [aside from the obvious reasons of it being really very disgusting] because of the damage it would do to the family when the relationship finally ends.
and also because relatives have more of an unfair hold over eachother.
and... it's vile.

there is nothing wrong with it my wife had incest with her dad and bother for many years and did not hurt her i was and am happy to share her with them
