Question:You who look at life on Earth as connected through evolution.
If you believe in evolution then you do believe everything came from a singularity. (We tried to see the universe the same way, but aren't so sure now).

Here's the question:

Shouldn't one who believes in evolution see everyone as their relatives, even animals, plants, bacteria... and treat all of them with respect and dignity, exactly as they are?

"All" life on earth is realated, we evolved from the same terrestrial tree. I don't "believe" in evolution in the sense that christians believe in creationisim; I "accept" the fact of evolution. Why would I treat bacteria with respect or dignity I would treat human beings? You cant draw an "ought" proposition from an "is" premises. Or as David Hume would say you cant draw an ethical conclusion from a natarulistic premesis.

i.e.
P. All life on earth is realted. Animals, trees, bacteria, are distint relatives of human beings.
Conclusion. Human beings should treat all life on earth with diginity.

Makes sense to me.

Love and blessings Don

There are those who try, they're called Jains.

But evolution also allowed for some of them to eat the others.

So when I eat some of them, I do so respectfully.

Your thoughts sound like they stem from Buddhism.

nope

a) when u say singularity, are u talking biology still? I've never heard our ancestors called singularities.
b) animals eat things. Some eat plants, some eat animals. There's nothing "disrespectful" about it.

I happen to be a nihilist/atheist who accepts science. I have no problem with eating, wearing, or experimenting on animals

No, because evolution is based on principles of natural selection, where the most fit and strongest genes shall survive. Evolution is integrated with nature, and in nature, it isn't no "circle of life," it's one organism for itself. Take a look at nature: it's brutal, it's ugly, it's gruesome. It's life. The only reason humans are not all like this is because we have developed or have a sense of morality instilled in us.

So no, I don't believe that we should treat every species with respect and dignity because with our aggressiveness, we are able to conquer and remain the top species and at the top of the food chain.

The same goes for creationism. All humans are related through Adam and Eve.

No, because we have artificially constructed divisions on which forms of life as considered appropriate to consume. We don't eat dogs, cats or horses, but in the pre-Colombian Americas and Korea, yes, people did eat dogs. We categorize animals according to their utility, not according to their relationship with us with the possible exceptionof other primates. The schema was developed long before the theory of evolution was

Kid your missing the point. Yeah i guess you could look at things that way, but whats the point? You speak of love and respect, and both of those are moral values set by society and culture, and by that culture are they determined to be considered to be right or wrong. Its not important for an human to respect an animal, especially one such as an amoeba, simply because that animal does not fall under those social orders that you as an individual might adhere to. Animals have no society, therefore why is it necessary to trat them with dignity or respect? As evolutionists, most of us believe that such creatures are less that us simply becouse were the dominant life form on this planet . not them. They couldnt keep with humans in natural selection, so no, they are not our equals. Those moral values that you think aply to everyone dont. Its called survival of the fittest. if every creature always treat every other creature as its equal, evolution simply wouldnt exist and we would be hear to question it

You can see them as your relatives, doesn't mean you can't go cannibalistic. Reptiles eat each other of the same species all the time aand I just hate all my cousins so I don't need to show them any respect let alone respect to very very very very very far distant cousins such as a centipede.

Uh, no. Accepting evolution doesn't turn you into some sort of "all life is equal" activist. Hell, even knowing that all humans are related doesn't even cut it for most people. Yes, even Christians.

What the hell are you talking about here though:
"I don't think it's wrong to eat animals or anything else of this nature. By singularity I mean one bacterial amoeba."

1) when people are talking big bang theory, the singularity they're talking about is a tiny area of space containing extremely condensed matter, not a single celled organism.
2) amoebas aren't bacteria, they're not even related to bacteria. They're single celled eukaryotes - more related to us than bacteria.
