Eggs came along a long time before there were chickens. Lizards were laying them for millions of years before there were ever any birds. Slowly these lizards evolved feathers. Like it or not the fossil record does exist for this idea. Identical skeletons have been found, some with feathers, some without.

At some point an egg hatched and what came out looked sufficiently different from what had been coming out before that someone named it chicken.

So this answer is not as difficult to understand as philosophers have lead us to believe.

There is a way of really knowing. It is in Genesis, Chapter 1. The chicken was created before birth through eggs was needed or in place - just as Eve was created before the birth of her sons was needed or in place. Until man's fall, there was no pain of birth.

Some kind of genetic mutation caused the creation of the chicken, so it kind of goes without saying that it was the egg (which the chicken then hatched from). Ive never really got the deal with this question - i thought it was obvious??! lol

this is a metaphor for creationism versus evolution. If you think this has been solved, then you are kidding yourself. It's one of life's unanswerables, for the time being.

The Real Answer is a circle has no begining.

DEFINATLY the egg because.... the chicken came out of the egg and lots of species lay eggs so the first egg with a chicken in it would have been a mutant form of another animal and so when it hatched out from the EGG as a chicken it then went on to breed and so became the chicken we all know and love. So the egg came first. Cheers! :)

Scientifically it had to be a chicken. Go back far enough and sooner or later you will find that in the evolution of the bird there was a very different creature that laid an egg of "IT'S" kind, what was hatched was a creature that was different than "IT'S" kind but close enough to be called a "chicken".
From that came the first egg.

egg it was made by to different species of dino's who had the right genes to make a chicken! who which later did it with a different dino and then layed an egg and it became another chicken! and so on..... make sense? lol ahaha idk i just made this up but yeahhh :)
