Yes, of course you can come up with some unusual interpretations of a film or any other artwork without being sure that the director really made a certain film with your interpretations in mind.

This happens a lot in studies in the humanities, especially in literature. Indeed the deconstructionists take the extreme view that it is impossible for us to find out in any given text whether we understand an author's intention--or, for that matter, whether the author himself or herself had any clear understanding of what his or her intention was.

(I think this view is somewhat extreme, for I am quite sure you understand what I myself am trying to say in this message.)

I remember from some of my own classes in the humanities that my own professors had some interpretations that I felt were utterly off the wall. I couldn't say this openly, or course, or my grades would suffer. This eventually turned me off bigtime to studies in the humanities and the social sciences.

i think it's for entertainment i guess.

Everyone has some interpretation of a movie that they think somehow applies to life. Look at the Matrix, now a group of people truly think that they are living in a virtual world, not that I am ruling that out but it seems a little far fetched. Anyway, if you want to find out if Spirited Away (a great movie by the way, nice choice) has any real meaning that you will have to talk to the director himself.
