Position:Home>Philosophy> What is the purpose of living things adapting for surival?

Question:It is well-known that living things adapt to survive in the environment they're in. This may seem like a silly question because it is so simple, but why exactly do they bother. Essentially the question is, then: If there is no purpose to life, then why do we instinctually attempt to survive?

This is actually a very good question and not as readily apparent as it seems, there really is no inherent reason for any given organism to attempt to stay alive for the simple sake of its existence. However, the desire for survival is a prerequisite for survival to be possible, but that does not mean that it is a prerequisite for organisms in general. Consider this: One organism just happens to be born with the will to survive, they are born with the desire or the potential to develop the desire to survive. They pass on this gene to their ancestors, and all their surviving ancestors posses it. Another organism, perhaps by some mutation, is born without this will, or desire. Obviously, this creature would die very quickly if it had no desire to live. As a result, it would not be able to mate and its genes would die out. That is why every organism today seems to have a will to survive, because any without it would have died out and failed to pass on this supposed gene that inhibits this desire. The same could be said for the desire to mate.

well. i would say that the purpose IS to survive. I think the main question now is WHY is the purpose of life to survive, if you must ask such a question.

BECUZ DEY DONT WANT TO DIE, STOOPD

So, what are you saying Lego Dee-ego? Are you saying we should enforce suicidal attempts or we should just chill out because life isn't that hard after all? and how with so many different back rounds?

The survival instinct that helps us adapt to specific environments is just an instinct, it doesn't have a "purpose", thoughts or a reason other than surviving.

The law of nature is "survival of the species".

The species Human is the most fragile like a hare and strong like a Lion. Yet Humans are responsible for the the endangerment of all species including its own.

This is especially distrubing when one considers that we are all connected and we depend on the other species more than they depend upon us.

The purpose of Life is that we take RESPONSIBILITY by giving Life PURPOSE.

The dolphins give life porpoise!

The process is more subtle than it appears. To you, your lifetime seems to take place over a long period of time. In geological terms, however, you are just a blip. You may think you have the luxury of brooding over your impermanence, but that is only an illusion. Life does what it can to necessitate the appropriate means to survive in the limited scope of our existence. In other words, the struggle to survive "IS" the purpose of life.

I guess the answer you are looking for is God, am I correct?

you answered your own question... things adapt to survive...

"If there is no purpose to life." Are these your thoughts? "INSTINCTUALLY" There is your answer.
