So we can appreciate the positive.

It's all caused by mankind. :]

if there wasnt suffering then you couldnt know happiness....simply as that....

because of people's selfishness. honestly. if people weren't so set on making a fortune for themselves, then the people who work for them, and get payed nothing, wouldn't suffer. wars would not be started, people wouldn't go hungry, etc. As sad as it is this isn't going to change. The only thing capable of changing peoples' hearts is God.

You might be expecting a big answer.

Well,

God finds it humorous.

so that we appreciate happiness?

Suffering is a part of life, but only a small part. Nobody ever seems to notice when things are joyous, peaceful or plain boring. Most only remember the pain and suffering. When things get better you should remember the suffering, it'll help you appreciate the good times even more.

what is with all this "so we can know happiness" crap?

That is NOT why there is suffering in this world. What about organisms that cannot experience happiness, but can surely suffer. Can a fly experience happiness? What about a Starfish? However, we know that they can suffer. What would be the point in those creatures suffering if its purpose is to allow the appreciation of happiness. Those answers are garbage.

There is suffering simply because there are organisms who have the capacity to feel emotional and physical pain on this Earth. That is why there is suffering. People attack other people, animals attack other animals. Bricks fall, earthquakes occur, Tsunamis occur, and organisms are in the way, and thus suffer pain. Its pretty simple.

Suffering makes you more resolute.

Many religions contend suffering exists because we need to grow and understand. Some even say it was our choice to be born in this world.

Preferring Satan to God.
