Position:Home>Philosophy> Is it immoral to eat more than you need?

Question:In the spirit of our (Americans') new found realization that constant overconsumption of resources is, um, ruining the earth, how to do you feel about our shameless overconsumption of food?

The debate over renewable vs. non-renewable resources notwithstanding, should the argument against overconsumption extend to food?

Fun question, huh?

Yeah, fun question :D

Yes, I think it's immoral. We know it's bad for our bodies, and we know that there are a LOT of people in the world that don't have nearly enough to eat...yet we still overeat. I think you could sum it up by saying overeating is giving into temptations and also a failure to do something that would help other people (and yourself) ... and with anything else that would be classified as immoral.

Yes, it is. Gluttony is immoral and disgusting.

I wouldn't say that it is immoral, but I agree that we could be damaging our own supply by over consuming.

Ummm - gluttony - certainly one of my favorite sins!

I believe it is wrong to take more than you need whatever the resource. We can't keep up with the demand. You see a society of wasteful people. We've forgotten the words of Franklin..."waste not, want not".

Gluttony is one of the 7 deadly sins, along with lust, wrath, sloth, envy, pride and greed. A psychologist would argue that these are just states of mind and that what matters is actions.
The question presupposes that there is a finite supply of food available. This is true under local conditions, such as exists in Darfur at present. It is not true of the world as a whole. The problem is cost and distribution, as well as cultural preferences. Algae can be made into nourishing cakes. Would you eat them?
Any insect or animal protein is good food for humans. Would you eat sea worms? Lobsters have eight legs, which means they are related to spiders. Shrimp are a form of sea insect.
There is plenty of food.

It is, shameless, worthless, sin full and in moral, and throwing away worst. the more you (hold or control) they less opportunity others have to get.

Immoral is an idea that exists to make the holier than thou's feel better about themselves.

Al it will do is make you fat.

Love and blessings Don

philosophically and morally, yes because while we're over consuming , billions of other people around the world are starving. Sorry for being a party pooper
