Position:Home>Philosophy> The 21st Century: What Have We Got To Prove For It?

Question:We have progressed eight years into a new century, and a new millienium, and what have we done? Launched a military campaign that has cost us 4,000 lives? Thrown our economy into a downturn, which could lead to a recission? Destroyed the environment beyond the point of return? When historians look back, 200 years from now, what will they think about the beginning of the new millienium?

Well, we've got remarkable new medical advances which have lowered the infant mortality rates, fatality rates, and number of sicknesses per capita by astronomical percentage. We boast one of the most open-minded nations in terms of alternative sexualities and religion (Try saying you're a homosexual Jew in the Middle East and see what happens). We have technological advancements such as computers and iPods of such amazing advancement that third-world countries would **** their pants to look at us. We're fighting this war in the Middle East (it is BEYOND just Iraq, that's merely what the media focuses on).

As a matter of fact, the ONLY negative things that the history books will capitalize on is our snivelling excuse of an immigration policy, and how easily our society is brain-washed by drive-by media nonsense. We boast the most successful system of government in the world, and one of the few not still under a dictatorship. We elect our leaders, we have the power to remove them, and we are still the strongest in the world.

Hate to break it to you, but we didn't START pollution. Remember in your high school history class about the Industrial Revolution? We released over 150% MORE CO2 and other toxins into the air than present day, and they had no issues. And about 8,000 YEARS AGO, Asian rural nations used a process called "flooding" their rice fields, which released HUGE portinos of methane into the atmosphere. In fact, this millenia is without a DOUBT the MOST environment-conscious, even if our resource consumption is higher.

What America needs to do now is stop listening to air-headed monkeys like Al Gore and Mrs. Clinton. We need to return to the values set forth by the departed Ronald Reagan and all other TRUE Republicans, not the moderate Liberal-Republican imbeciles like John McCain and Ron Paul. Stop listening to the morons who tell you that America is a doomed nation that is personally responsible for destroying the world and itself, it simply isn't true.

If we're still around in two hundred years which might not be the case! But to answer your question these things are not new, economic cycles go up and down and wars happen. I think the history books will have a lot to say about 9/11 because that was something that was totally unexpected but the rest of it is just part of history repeating itself.

It may just be considered the second Dark Ages.

they will think what a bunch of idiots. they had all this technology and look how they used it. they blew people up. they damaged minds by computer games and telephones. they killed the ozone by not using their brains. im so glad im not from that century. and im so upset that they ruined it for us. thats what they will say.

We are not in a recession, the housing market is down a little, the environment is not beyond repair. The biggest problem we have is crime and we believe everything the Media throws at us.Try not to be so negative, things will start looking up.What if everyone thought like you.Cheer up!!

That we are still making the same mistakes of the PAST.

1. Putting this as the understatement of all time you sound like a major pessimist
2. Hate to break it to you kid, (i hope...) but pollution did not start at the beginning of this millenium, we just realized the problem, and until you figure it out, you cant fix it.
3. You obviously have NO understanding of this war. This is a war where we, an established country, are trying to fight off guerilla force with goals that threaten your life, belief and freedom. I am not even a huge patriot. But it would be nice if people would just GET that this war is important, and so are the people fighting it. They went into war to defend something. Try not to destroy it while their gone, yeah?

we evented Enzyte...that's got to be a plus.

Exactly what I've been thinking!

iPods have practically replaced the wasteful production of millions of disposable pre-recorded formats.

Besides that, we've pretty much screwed things up so bad it's not funny.

Have you ever seen the movie "Idiocracy"?

Oh don't be such a Cynic! You'll give yourself an ulcer.
In the beginning of the 20th century, we had gas light.
At the end of the 20th century, we had nuclear light.
We went from choo-choo to Outer Space.
We went from Pony Express to Internet.
We went from kites to passenger jets carrying hundreds.
We went from child labor, segregation and total subjugation of woman to guaranteeing Civil Rights for everyone.
There is no telling what wonderful things we are capable of in the future!
Give us time. The best in Mankind always wins out in the end.
