It so happens that the only method of time travel that hasn't been proved impossible by relativity resolves this question. To create a time machine, if it's possible, you would need to create a wormhole through spacetime. Then you'd need to move one end forward through time slower than the other. Then you can travel through the end that moved forward through time faster to the end that travelled through time slower, which would be in the past for the time traveller. However, since both ends are in the future to us, we would not have possibly encounterred the time traveller.

Or, put more simply, if time travel is possible, a time traveller cannot travel back in time to before the invention of the time machine. Since the time machine has not yet been invented, noone can come back to this time to tell us about it.

There is a legitimate physicist named Mallet who is currently working on a method to acheive this sort of time machine by using spinning lasers. I'm not exactly sure how that's supposed to work. I think there's a good chance he'll either do it or he'll figure out why time travel is, in fact, completely impossible.

They may have invented a time machine and discovered the secret of invisibility too ( as well as how to stop any sound from them been heard). They may be able to view us but are barred from revealing themselves or changing anything by some superior being. A chilling thought!

For all we know there could be time travelers and that they come back and adjust the past. Since the past is changed, it could change us.

No - we will be able to but the current theories all agree that any possible form of time travel would only enable the traveler to go forward in time but not back, thus rendering "Back to the Future" part II the only chapter with any truth in it. I plan to visit the year 3000 to see if we DO all live underwater and to hang out with David Bowie.

We are on it. It is called Earth it travels through time in what we recognise as a forward direction. There is no reverse gear and subjectively it does go faster as you get older. Man cannot escape the Space Time continuum, it is theoretically possible he may go forward (by travelling at near light velocities away from his current Earthbound location), but not back.

If someone created a time machine now, then we could not travel back in time because one was not invented a long time ago. So someone 100 years from now could only travel back to the point when the time machine was created.

We can only assume that if we also claim that the 21st century is of sufficient interest to be worth visiting. Maybe the Aztecs or the Vikings often met time travellers because they were more interesting than we are. Or perhaps in 2025 millions of time travellers will come from the future.
