Question:Is there someone on here who believes it is the right of every person to decide if and when to end his or her life? Is there someone who believes this can be done rationally and by those who are not "mentally ill"? Do such a person exist on Yahoo Answers?

I think that it ultimately the choice of the person.

Governments, rules and regulations are only really assumed authority that we have given power to ... mainly out of the fear of punishment because that is how what they do to anyone who does not conform to their ways. they punish them.

Ultimately everyone if they were fully in touch with who they were, would have no need for these assumed authorities in their lives because they would automatically choose the highest good - that is with on suppression or controlling influence.

To call someone "mentally ill" has been an excuse to shut them up and to more easily lord ones authority over them. Most of these people if they were really listened to would have a lot to share and teach the world, but because of the power of governements etc, they are shut up pretty quick and their message not given a chance to fully mature in what people would see as a complete message.

I have asked a lot of people here similar questions and got bored by the brainwashed reply that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and I don't believe that this had anything to do with my questions in the first place.

I hope this helps answer your question. Kind thoughts.

Mommmmmy ! Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Whole countries believe in this. It's called euthanasia. I believe it is legal in Scandinavia.

I believe that if you are happy in killing yourself by all means do it I'm not going to call you crazy but I may want to talk to you and talk you out of it. Life is a precious gift whether you believe it to be from God or whatever else it's an amazing chance we are even here yet we are.

I think life is a right guarenteed to everything living but so is death so yeah, the government just doesn't want to lose another voter or source of income ;)

I believe that a if somoene wishes to die then they should be able to make this decision themselves. No one should be able to control you and prevent you from living out your hearts desires, we are supposed to be born with free will.

I would try to speak with the person and hopefully come to some reasoning with them that makes them able to see there are many reasons to live and that death will come for them when their time comes.

I am one of those people. I was never given a choice in the matter of this supposed existence. Whether suicide is the "right" thing to do is beside the point. It is just another choice, and people have the right to make choices.

why don't you talk to people who tried to commit suicide but failed and is alive today? They might disagree with you. How would you feel if your mother took her own life?

yea i rekon youthanasia should be legal in certain cases with certain guidlines, if someone dosnt want to live or they are living in constant pain and they want it to end it should be their right as human beings to end their life. But they should think about the impact it would have before they make any decisions. Personally i would never do it and i see no point in doing such a thing but it should be your right if you did want to.
DISCLAIMER: i am in no way condoneing suicide

If you go to the psych section, you'll probably find some overdepressed thirteen year old that will, but other than that, probably not.

The only time I could rationalize this is in the case of something like a mercy killing, other than that the rationality behind death carries to many unknowns for a true rationalist to be serious about it once all the options are weighed.

I think that anyone that has had to watch someone they love, die and slow painfully death would believe that everyone should have the right to choose to end their live peacefully... how dare someone be forced to die slowly in pain!!!

Yes, I am sure there is someone out there. But then they would be killing themselves if they were...so, I guess I was wrong.
The answer is no. Those people are not out there/here (in Yahoo Answers).

It's cultural. For example, I know that some Japanese feel that suicide is honorable; if, by their estimation, their continued existence would cause financial/social burden on their family and society.
Western culture places, what many would say, an exorbitantly high value on human life. And maybe overvaluing ones existence is irrational and delusional.

you mean a decent person who wouldn't mind commiting suicide? well i would, even if life's incredible at the moment. i DEFINATELY wouldn't do it now, but i was just thinking today "hmmm, maybe after i graduate college and feel that i've "had a good run", i'll walk across the road when no cars are present. if i get hit,it was destiny, meant to be. if not, then it was indeed, destiny also." =]

Not I, I am against euthanasia.

But, a person can make choices that lead to their demise. There is no law that controlls a persons poor choices.

yes see id give em a year
id book em in - interview the hell out of them and say come back in a year if you still want to go go...
people often do the most amazing things when they are going to die.

I think there needs to be an adjustment in the values of humanity as a species

at the moment Death is an incredibly oppressive idea

i don't really blame the current range of Old Age Pentioners (just a few rules broken in the 50's and 60's) for fearing there maker.

Honestly it death is going to happen chronically frozen is a great idea but
...from the company that brought you 'name one thing that actually works properly ... apart from the TV'.

Basically previous generations have been disturbed by how this event will occur (death that is...).

Here we have the ability to wipe a whole load of problems and behaviours in one fell swoop

Its an engaging thought that the governments are so concerned about the authenticity of our 'departure', when everything else is "quintessentially fake".

..i sit many an hour pondering on how they (the governments) presume to make any president at all - not even they obey the rules of there own game.
... in today's world, the value of life appears to be what?

wouldn't it just be nicer if you were old.. or with extenuating circumstances you could opt out when your body could no longer support your mind.

Cause thats basically what happens we wear out...
If were not stuck being mauled by beasts in the jungle, here in 'west world' we degenertivly wear out.

yup.... i believe in that...
especially if you really find no joy in living... =)

that's why.... listen more and appreciate how lucky we are...
