Position:Home>Philosophy> Would you agree that most people are committing suicide very slowly, taking 70 y

Question:Let's face it, very few people would consider taking their own lives abruptly or immediately.

However, i've seen so many people around who are just living wasted lives, surviving but not living... growing old, instead of growing UP.

From the cradle to the grave...an approximate 70 years is all it takes.

What are your views?

In response I leave you with this question,

For those who have lived lives of empty nothingness, devoid of purpose or meaning, do you think they ever really lived at all? Is it suicide to kill that which was never truly alive?

If they are born with suicidal thoughts then I suppose so. Or maybe we are commiting suicide slowly and we just don't know it.... Ok I see what you are talking about...

The process of dying begins at birth. All that suicides do ,actually, is that they put a stop to that process, bringing about premature death.

In a way.

I know I am overweight a bit and I should exercise but I dont atm, I do however eat chocolate and bad foods when i am stressed also not goood but I do it. I wish I could stop.

In a way thats not promoting life is it could be looked at as suicide in a very extreme way.

Your question was good and made me think, I thank you for asking it. I have re-evaluated a few things. Bless you.

touche!!! You may have a point there...

All death is suicide. You get what you believe. If you believe that death is inevitable it will be.

Quantum physics now can not find out why people die apart from toxification of cells from negative thinking. So if we have not mastered our negative thinking, we will not have mastered physical immortality.

Believe it or not, there are actually physically immortal people around. They don't advertise the fact. It is our journey of self discovery.

So everyone who has ever died and intends to die this time around again is committing suicide ... so to speak.

I would have to say that regardless of personal growth issues, that death is unavoidable. And I have discovered that those who seem to live life to the fullest, die young, so the old saying is true, that living is the number one cause of death.

It depends on how the individual views their life and whether they think they are wasting it. Relative truths.

He not busy bein' born is busy dyin'. -- dylan

I think that suicide is an intentional act to end one's current life. People who you perceive to be living wasted lives (btw, I feel that way sometimes too) are not intentionally ending their lives.

I would say that many people are what an old friend of mine used to call "flatliners." It's sad, I think, to just wait for death and to not make a contribution while we are still here. As a person with a disability known as multiple chemical sensitivities / environmental illness (and the social ostracism that goes along with it), there have been times when I have wanted to leave the planet, but it wasn't so much that I wanted to die. I just don't like what I see here on Planet Earth--war, meanspiritedness, poverty, discrimination, transient relationships, environmental degradation, etc. I just wanted to be somewhere where these things do not happen, where people know how to treat one another respectfully. In my poetry, I say that I am from the Planet ZXR7. Who knows if such a place exists?

So, I have chosen to live, create, love and be loved, and be my authentic self in the here and now, no matter what anyone else thinks of me. I have come to understand that each one of us is here for a reason. Not everyone has the inner strength or courage to live life to the fullest, to live out their purpose (or even know what that is), so they are just going through the motions, at best sleepwalking through life. God bless them. That was me once upon a time. Maybe one day they will choose to come out of that living death, as I did. I know from experience, that judging them or despising them probably just makes it worse. They need, imho, a lot of compassion and some kind of a wakeup call. Mine was almost dying from this illness and getting kicked out of my aunt's house, followed by 9/11, followed by the Iraqi War. I think they also need to figure out or open to what brings them joy, despite the craziness all around us. I find great joy in my work as an educator, artistic work, creative solitude, and sharing special moments with friends.

I think all of us are taking the same journey. Its pretty sad you're so judgmental about the rest of us.
EDIT:
And I would base my statement on the fact that people are trudging through this life. Yeah not everyone can take the hits with the grace and dignity we would like. Often people turn to drugs and even crime. Does that mean they deserve to die or they should consider suicide? Does a life turned downward have no chance for redemption?
Am I so stupid to know I am in the philosophy section
and you think no one can have a different view than you?

True, never really thought about that...

not every body wants to live to the same age
when i need help up and down the stairs and it takes 3 mins to get out of the car i would want to die but im very healthy so that could happen at any age
