I think we wouldn't be able to handle it and we'd all be completely insane.

Science via pet scans and ct scans has debunked the myth that we do not use 95% of our brains...now, if we only acted like we use what we have....

I dont know but I think our mind would expode. At this point I sometimes feel like I am containing too much information. Even when I want to learn more, thinking too much is often not a good thing. Sometimes it just really makes more sense to enjoy life and do what you can.

The brain uses different parts at different times.
we are using the brain all of it, it goes from one area to another in rapid speed, so it looks like we are only using 15% but we are using 100% for different functions but not at the same time.
Much like a computer.

I am only talking from an Ex-Patient, point of view but.
From what Ive been able to garner from various Neurologists and Psychologists.
the 90-95% of the Brain, not employed in the function of Mental Activity.
Is largely orientated, towards performing the Physical Functions of Life.
Without which, we would cease to LIVE.

The origins of the 10% usage are hard to debunk. It might come from the fact that researches in the early 1900's found that only about 10% of the neurons in the brain are firing at any given time. Then theres the fact that only 10% of of the brains cells are neurons, the rest are glial cells that, despite being involved in learning, do not function in the same way that neurons do.
Either way, we do use much more of our brain than a measly 10%! The cells in the hypothalmus continue to grow...why would this be if we dont use them? There is also something called neurogenesis; the production of new neurons within the mature, adult brain.
All in all, if we used the full capacity of our brains, we'd be a race of supergeniuses, and soon outgrow ourselves. Instead of genocides and wars, we'd simply die of exhaustion, boredom.

***edit
from Scientific American, "What is correct however, is that at certain moments in anyone's life, such as when we are simply sitting and thinking, we may be using only 10 percent of our brain. " Neurologist Barry Gordon of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore.
"New brain-imaging evidence would dismiss the notion that only 10% of the human brain is only used at any given time. In PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans for any activity including sleeping, the entire brain "lights up" in nearly every area indicating a great amount of cortical activity taking place during the execution of nearly all cognitive tasks. More than 60% of the brain is active even during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep or dreaming." Kenneth A. Wesson
Education Consultant, Neuroscience

I'm beginning to question where these numbers come from. I was reading some research a few weeks ago that argued humans use virtually all their brain - it's closer to 97 - 98% not 5 - 8%.

That would be a myth.

We use all of our brains, we only dedicate a small amount to conscious though.
The rest is keeping you alive.

Well i heard some where that the part of our brain we don't use is just a back up. =)

But, to answer the question.
if it were to be active, well we would remember things more and need a lot more sleep!

You would become truly and utterly "enlightened".....return to innocence!!!!!!

i think people get them selves in enough trouble using only a little bit of thier brain.
