Position:Home>Philosophy> Does our mind exist outside our body?

Question:I personally think that our brain is the physical nucleus of our mind and that it surrounds us sort of like the aura (perhaps the aura is part of it...) . What do you think? Have there been any scientific researches on that?

Yes there has been research done on this...Archetypes, the Collective Un/Conscious, Parapsychology to name but a few avenues worth looking into if you seriously want to learn about the 'mind'.

I have a neurological condition that has not effected my brain... but is messing with my mind...so I believe that there is definite distinctions.

I have also been aware of 'Spirit' since I was knee high to a grasshopper....so I 'know' that we use our minds & brains in ways that science has yet to fully explain.

Good question!!

no, it's in us...

absolutely not.

The slightest beginnings of research into brain science will demonstrate clearly that injury done TO the brain will affect your mind. Damage done "around" your brain like your nose or ear or 6 inches away from your skull will do nothing to your mind whatsoever.

(to be clear, I don't mean if a shockwave damages your brain from six inches away, I mean damage localized that does not affect the brain directly)

There is a discrepancy in your description with respects to the question. I disagree with the description, but not necessarily the question. I like to define the mind as the living part of the brain. Without life, there would be no mindfulness, whereas a brain exists even through physical death. Mindfulness... we are not merely mindful of what goes on inside of us, but also what goes on around us, therefore, our mind exists all around use, although our brain remains in our head, acting as a house for the mind. It all starts in the brain, so in that respect, it is a sort of nexus, however, our mind is not limited to remaining in our brain.

Philosophy is much different than science, our "mind" has many definitions, different with each person so in philosophical question i might say it is, but dude, our brain is an organ within our body. no question.

The question you ask is somewhat overgeneralized as to "mind."

In point of scientific measurement, there are several states of mind which have been reliably identified.

Some of the rarer and more attained levels of mindfulness include lucidity in dreams, aware wakefulness in daily life, coherent out-of-body experience. In the latter, which are as rare as quantum physicists or classical composers in the general population, mind as aspect of individual awareness moves as a lifeform outside of body temple.

Few correlative verifications (e.g., two oob'rs simultaneously reporting on double-blind assigned target coordinates, being questioned real time re events thereat, with statistically significant levels of information reporting) have been done, although some of this caliber have indeed occurred.

This is called the mind-body problem, and it is as old as Western thought. Many modern scientists research in this area, and they tend to end up with Thomas Hobbes' answer to it, that the mind is a subset of the body.

Alas, Thomas Hobbes' answer also leads to his conclusion that human life is "nasty, brutish and short."

I have spent many years thinking of the answer to your question, and all I can say is that I hope Hobbes was wrong.

Our mind is everything we are. Our experiences, our knowledge, our humor, everything. Our mind determines who we are yet it is ever changing. And I disagree with the person who said that an injury that doesn't hurt the brain doesn't hurt the mind. A serious injury that causes trauma can effect the mind. The mind can be effected with out physical injury as well. One such instance is "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder". Ask any one of the many troops who spent time at war how their "Mind" was effected. Even if they were not injured themselves.

As far as existing outside our bodies and brain. I believe that our personality is a projection of our mind.

Why not take your's out from the case and check it out please, and remember to share your findings here on this site. That way you can actually save all the rest of us the unnecessary pain.

It sure thinks so.!!!

No but somebody can be out of their mind .
