Question:What's the point of doing nothing?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: What's the point of doing nothing?

Well, I'm playing chess right now because I love playing and it makes me happy.

*sigh* There is NO point in doing anything. We all just die in the end anyways. But to keep myself from getting too depressed, I just tell myself; KEEP IT INTERESTING! Be as weird as possible, as random as possible, and just have fun. That's what makes doing stuff worth it.

Personal gratification...

It's why the world does what it does, and its the only reason for anything.

Unless one understands why action is to be done then there is no point of doing anything.
Krishna explains in The Bhagavad Gita Text 5 chap.
"The renunciation of work and work in devotion are both good for liberation. But, of the two, work in devotional service is better than renunciation of works."

PURPORT by Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada
"Fruitive activities (seeking sense gratification) are cause for material bondage. As long as one is engaged in activities aimed at improving the standard of bodily comfort, one is sure to transmigrate to different types of bodies, thereby continuing material bondage perpetually. Srimad-Bhagavatam confirms this as follows:
"People are mad after sense gratification, and they do not know that this present body, which is full of miseries, is a result of one's fruitive activities in the past. Although this body is temporary, it is always giving one trouble in many ways. Therefore, to act for sense gratification is not good. One is considered to be a failure in life as long as he makes no inquiry about the nature of work for fruitive results, for as long as one is engrossed in the consciousness of sense gratification, one has to transmigrate from one body to another. Although the mind may be engrossed in fruitive activities and influenced by ignorance, one must develop a love for devotional service to Vasudeva. Only then can one have the opportunity to get out of the bondage of material existence." (Bhag. 5.5.4-6)
Therefore, jnana (or knowledge that one is not this material body but spirit soul) is not sufficient for liberation. One has to act in the status of spirit soul, otherwise there is no escape from material bondage. Action in Krsna consciousness is not, however, action on the fruitive platform. Activities performed in full knowledge strengthen one's advancement in real knowledge. Without Krsna consciousness, mere renunciation of fruitive activities does not actually purify the heart of a conditioned soul. As long as the heart is not purified, one has to work on the fruitive platform. But action in Krsna consciousness automatically helps one escape the result of fruitive action so that one need not descend to the material platform. Therefore, action in Krsna consciousness is always superior to renunciation, which always entails a risk of falling. Renunciation without Krsna consciousness is incomplete, as is confirmed by Srila Rupa Gosvami in his Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (1.2.258):
"Renunciation by persons eager to achieve liberation of things which are related to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, though they are material, is called incomplete renunciation." Renunciation is complete when it is in the knowledge that everything in existence belongs to the Lord and that no one should claim proprietorship over anything. One should understand that, factually, nothing belongs to anyone. Then where is the question of renunciation? One who knows that everything is Krsna's property is always situated in renunciation. Since everything belongs to Krsna, everything should be employed in the service of Krsna. This perfect form of action in Krsna consciousness is far better than any amount of artificial renunciation by a sannyasi of the Mayavadi school."

I am so glad nowI know what to do and why.
It's a matter of consciousness.

Well, there are a lot of points...

You do things for the feeling you get, you do things for the appreciation of others, you do things to help, you do things because a life without purpose, is no life at all.

I do things because I have a husband and 3 kids counting on me, I have a family that I love and doing even the most mundane things feels like a huge blessing to me.

God didn't grant me time on this earth for me to just lay there... but technically, even laying there IS something, isn't it.

The point is, to DO is to live.... so there ya go.

none

there is none, just instinct

There is no meaning of life. People always try and look for the meaning but there isn't one. If you ask , whats the point of life , that is easily answered- the point is what you make it.

the point to anything is the value you attach to it... I smile and laugh b/c my daughter is happy healthy and sweet... Yeah, I could focus on the autism, or choose to rejoice with her in her triumphs...
The point of the creation of man was for God's pleasure...your existence makes Him happy... ever tho't of that? God delights in your existence...

Well, there is no actual point. you DO because you can.
You asked the question because you CAN ask, when you cease to exist is when you Can't.

I make a sand castle on a beach. I enjoy making sand castles. The water comes and washes it away. I know this will happen, but I do still make the sand castle. Sure enough, the tide comes in and breaks it down and makes it flat beach again. But think about it. Now someone else can make a new sand castle and live in the joy that comes with it. This is the only reason why we do anything. If it makes us happy, we strive for it. Time is our blessing and our curse. It continues to bring thing in and out of existence. It would seem to be for only one goal, happiness. What is this thing we call happiness? I believe it to be our contemptuousness with our limited existence. In other words, we know we are going die, but things the things that momentarily make us forget this make us happy. Think about how much happiness is lost when you say that love (or anything) is worthless. It takes away from that experience. I'm not saying to not think about the absurdity of life, I'm saying don't be afraid to forget it sometimes.

It is a very good question. We have to accept the fact that we are here on this Earth - in this reality and there is nothing we can do about it. So we have to make the best of it and search for peace and happiness. Part of that is living within this world and our society as it is.

It is the "Pursuit of Happyness"

also a good movie...

You do have a point, sometimes everything we do seems likes a lesson in futility - all we are is dust in the wind, everything we do comes to nothing anyway, etc....

However, collectively, everything we do can influence the greater good, or in other words, improve our lives in general. That could be the point of not only doing anything, but also doing everything...

Hope this cheers you up, you sound sad...

Spend time wisely, or as unwisely, as we wish.

Because the possibilities are always there that tomarrow will bring something new and exciting into our lives. Because we can always learn new things.
BUT, if we just sit around feeling sorry for ourselves, nothing will ever change. We will just sit there day after day thinking life isn't worth living.
Why not get out and enjoy life. Kiss a tree, thank it for giving you oxygen to breath. Kiss a vegetable, thank it for giving you nourishment. Kiss a cow, thank it for giving you milk, butter and meat. Kiss a mirror and thank yourself for being alive to enjoy life.
Only YOU can make yourself happy and satisfied with your life. No one or no thing can do it for you. So get to work, honey. Life is short enough without wasting it on depression and apathy.

The guy who told you that he likes to play chess because it makes him happy was right.

Ultimately, life is pointless. The most we can do is find things we like to do that will keep us amused until we are dead.

It is especially nice if people find things to do that they like and that will make significant social contributions. Einstein did this with his discovery in physics, and the founders of Google did this when they built up their company.
